Help-Can someone please explain true HD output/ new sound formats

HI, I am about to get a receiver (Onkyo) which can decode the new sound formats. I am a bit confused though because do I also need, for example, a blue ray player which can also decode the new formats to make it all work (I am thinking about a PS3). Any replies gratefully received!

Thanks Andew. After reading this it makes me wonder if it was so important to buy a receiver that could decode the new formatts if it is going to be done (in most cases) inside the Blue Ray/ HD DVD players.....
I think this goes some way towards explaining it...
