Hi all,

I have recently bought a Denon 3311 and connected my Sony BDP S760 to it along with my MA apex system and ps3. However it seems as if the blu ray quality is not as good from the S760 when it is attached to the Denon which is then connected to the TV compared to when the Blu-ray player is connected directly to the TV.

Is there something wrong with the settings or something? Would this also influence the quality of the sound? This also seems the same for the picture quality of the ps3.

Also, sorry for being such a newbie but i have a few questions... does the blu-ray have much say in the quality of the sound produced seeing as it's connected to the amp anyway? i Always thought that the amp was better at processing such things =S If that were the case would the sound quality increase if i were to buy a new up to date player?

Any help would reatly appreciated. Thank you.

Make sure the denons set to 'THROUGH' for the hdmi input, else it will add processing

Sound shouldnt be affected at all, but make sure the denons doing the processing and not the Sony (for what it can decode)

My view is that the fewer switching devices the signal passes through the better. I always connect sources direct to the TV and use the amp just for audio.

Last June I was on the panel of the Big Question at What HIFi towers and connections got discussed during a break, and Ketan who does a lot of the tests said I was absolutely right. Nice when an expert agees.

Thanks all. Chudleighpaul, how would i be able to connect the BDP directly to the TV and get audio from the speakers and amp?

You need a player with 5.1 analogue outs and an amp with 5.1 analogue ins. Connect those and you are on the road to HD audio heaven!

Just out of curiosity - would 5.1 analogue outs sound better than passing it through hdmi ? Quite interested in the direct to source idea and would obviously only use the hdmi lead for that ?

it all depends on which unit decodes the better sound.

Thanks, Does this mean that i'll need 6 analogue interconnects for a 5.1 system?

Re: Blu-ray picture quality??

I have a Panasonic BD80 player and Yamaha amp.

The audio is superb through the analogue connection.

I have checked your Sony player has 5.1 outs, don't know if the Denon has 5.1 ins, you will have to check.

I had my analogue leads made up by a local supplier. Double screened recording studio audio cable with gold plated connectors, cut to the exact length  required so there is no excess cable. Charged me £35.

What model is your Yamaha? Would you say the sound is the same by connecting it through Analogue interconnects? Thanks.

Re: Blu-ray picture quality??

Mine is an older amp, it has no HDMI connections so I cannot compare it, but I love the sound of the Yammy and would only change it if it went wrong.

HD sound through the analogue connects is awesome.
