5.1 Speakers with Stereo Source

Hi All,
I'm currently in the process of planning a 5.1 system around a Yamaha RX-V673.
What happens to the bass when one watches stereo PCM with the above system? Will the '.1' sub be ignored or can the system be configured to act like a 2.1 system?
I've heard systems in the past that just route audio to the front left and front right speakers. The speakers I'm planning on buying are tiny and would certianly need the sub at all times, not just during surround content.
Sorry if this is a silly question!

Hi there,
I don't want to use direct mode or even press any buttons apart from the source between a 5.1 Blu-Ray and PCM Stereo from the TV, for example?
Alex

No problem here. Direct mode will remove the sub unless you setup 'both' but all other modes will bring the sub into play.
