I don't think you've really understood what 1080p upscaling entails. It DOES NOT necessarily mean a better quality. Your DVD is only 576 lines, which will not fill the entire screen of your HD TV & would appear as a small letterbox in the middle of the screen. So this image is 'upscaled' to fill your entire screen.
Some players or TVs upscale these images better than others.
Gerrardasnails:Yes I do. Have you tried watching a DVD with your BD player set to 576i or whatever the native resolution is and then switching to 1080p?
Actually, it merely means that your blu-ray player is a better upscaler than your TV. When you set your BD player to 576i, your TV has to upscale the image, and when you switch to 1080p, your BD player upscales it.
Arghhhhh, ok!!! Amateurs aye =)
Thanks for the explanation and the link fella, great help thanks.

This would still give the OP an example of upscaling, one by the screen and one by the BD player. You were right that he didn't understand what upscaling means.
I have a PS3 and the dvd's on that look almost as good as the 1080i skyhd movies.
I am a believer..... And then lord came down and he said ... IT WAS GOOD!!!! ![]()
