Yamaha HS50M as desktop speakers?

Has anyone ever used these or similar monitors just for listening?

Something like the Focal XS books seemed like the obvious choice at first, until I started looking at small studio monitors. Also has anyone used the Matrix mini-i DAC as it looks like it could be a cheaper alternative to the DacMagic Plus? I've seen the Matrix mentioned somewhere on here before and I think some noise was mentioned.
