Hi All,

I am in need of a new amp to work with my newly bought speakers

Monitor Audio BX2's

Currently I have and am using my very old much built like a tank amp Denon PMA-250SE. This amp has done me well through the time I have had it.

However I have just bought a pair of Monitor Audio BX2's speakers and I am in the market for a decent well enough amp whcih can work well with the speakers.

I have a few in mind please can you all guide me through your thoughts on the follwoing:

Amplifier In Mind:===========1: Superfi - YAMAHA AS300 AMPLIFIER - 60w/ch2: Superfi - YAMAHA AS500 AMPLIFIER - 85w/ch - I tried this am this was good however it felt focused on vocals no base at all. 3: Marantz UK | PM6005 - w/ch??3: Marantz UK | PM6004 - 45w/ch - I tried this amp and felt it was good all around however a little basey 4: Pioneer A20 £200Do you reccomend any others which are of quality and substance. My budget is £100 to £300 max Any and all ideas are very much appreciated.

Thanks

Had both marantz pm6004 and a-s500 and the winner for me is the marantz, a little smoother sound and less analytical.

definitely definitely,i would recommend the nad 326bee.i also thought the yamaha was lacking bass and heard the nad next to it,and i thought it was a brilliant amp.almost certainly what you are after.it is 50 pound above your budget....but you might be able to find it cheaper....but if not i would totally recommend spending the little extra as i feel it worth much more than just 50 pounds extra in what you get in sound quality....if you are going to live with an amp for many years...50 pou ds is not a lot to warrant on extra expenditure.i know of some very knowledgeabke hifi enthusiasts who have owned this amp and say it is a hifi classic.it was a real close call between the nad and the rega when i bought my amp recently.

+1 for the Marantz. The BX'2s can sound a bit boomy if to close to the wall but if you place them about a foot away on decent stands they are a great combination with the Marantz.

The Yammy is a good amp and is very neutal. It gives a very honest reproduction of the music played through it. Try to demo both amp side by side and see for yourself. The Usher and Kef's Bookshelf goes well with the AS 500.

You can buy the Pioneer A-30 for less than £200 if you shop around.  Brilliant amp.

Also, the rotel ra-04. £250 but no remote if that bothers you. Rotels have a lovely sound for that price!

RE: What Amplifier for Monitor Audio BX2's??

Thank you for your reply. Ok Guys... I have just purchased a pair of Monitor Audio BX2's along with this I bought myself a pair of Sound style 2 speaker stands in black.

Still all in their boxes waiting patiently until I set up my room and find myself a decent integrated AMP. I did test and try out the Monitor Audio BX2's on both the following amps:

1: Murantz PM6004 - It sounded more punchy with allot of base and seemed the vocals were lost in the background some place, all settings base, treble, source direct and loudness were switched off. When switching the loudness button it all felt alive the base really come through smoothly however i felt it was a little over powered which made the vocals and instruments keys, and high hats drums settle back in the background.

2: Yamaha A S500 - very clear detailed sound which I loved however for me it just lacked that touch of base and kick. When turning up the base a touch all felt and sounded very well.

I think I will bank with the Yamaha A S500 at some point next month.

Just a few more questions that have been pondering around in my mind are:

1: Which is the best way (direct source) to allow playing music from my HP Envy 1205sa laptop to the amplifier? Any converters needed i.e. USB??

Note: full spec of laptop - HP Envy M6-1205SA review | Expert Reviews

2: Would I need a amp with a dac converter?

My Preferred Budget is : £250 max

3: Having owned and currently using a Denon I find these things absolute built like tanks which can be cranked up for long periods of times i.e. house party's, and studio work. However recently not many sounds shops in London which I have visited do not really rate the very highly at all.

How many w/pc is the Denon PMA-720A? & has this amp got a dedicated sup out to whcih if needed I may connect a sub like the one on the Yamaha a s500. ?

Thank you all very much for the helpful advice and support its very much appreciated.

RegardsJ

Can you home demo the said Amps? I think the MA will open up after some burn in.  The AS 500 is capable of producing the low bass (which you felt is not upto the mark) after a good run in. For the source with your lappy you can use a usb dac from M2tech,audioquest or HRT. Demo some and see which one gives a more fuller sound.

RE: What Amplifier for Monitor Audio BX2's??

You sure have been a great help and i really appreciate the advice and guidance.

I have been looking into grabbing a deal at some point next month, I have to save for a little before I go ahead with the purchase.

My choices are now:

1: Yamaha A S500

2: Denon PMA 720

Out of the two I have only every had the chance to hear the Monitor Audio BX2's with the Yamaha A S500 amp to whcih i felt sounded reasonable. The detail to my ears was very sharp and clear the only ever thing i felt it lacked was the base to which it for me did not sound so punchy at all. However as an overall I felt it sounded brilliant after I had turned up the base level just a tad.

As for the Denon PMA 720 can anybody tell me a little bit more about it, I mean I have visited Superfi Camden Town London and they clearly felt that the Denon was very much a automated sound which has been processed and was as i quote not a natural sound. They had little reason to explain why they felt this way other than the fact that Denon as a company has never produced many amps in the making. However they still thought it was good but of course not as good as the Yamaha.

Can anybody shed a little light on to the Denon PMA 720 Vs Yamaha A S500 Specifications??

Quality of parts and or overall company customer service??

as always all help and advice is much appreciated.

Regards

The BX2s are very clean, precise speakers to the point of being slightly clinical sounding. I had them and they'd work with slightly warmer electronics.

RE: What Amplifier for Monitor Audio BX2's??

Just a quick question for the Denon  pma-720:

1: Am I able to connect a Sub woofer at a later stage with the Denon pma-720?

I see with the Yamaha A S500 It has a dedicated sub connection port which I can not see with the Denon pma-720. Are either of these Amps warm enough in your oppnion if not then which would you recommend ?

Thanks

I've been living with the Yam AS500 for a few months now and find it to be an excellent all round amp with more than enough power. It was light and brittle sounding out the box but soon warmed up (sound wise). I don't find its bass end wanting, but the partnering speakers I have are the MS Aviano 6's. I don't think you would be disappointed getting it.

When I was looking at a new budget amp Couple of years back I bought the AS500 and took it back a week later. I'm no good at hifi talk but to me it was just boring!! I returned it and walked out with the cambridge audio Sr10 and what an excellent , powerful sounding amp it was indeed. Highly recommend . So there is one to consider as well as the 351c which I hear is excellent.
