Can you put your finger on what it is about the Linn's streaming capability (and I'm expressly excluding its DAC and amplification) that makes it better? If I pump my Sonos via a digital interconnect into a high quality outboard DAC and thence into high quality pre/power amps, so bypassing the DAC and amplification in the Sonos, won't I potentially (and depending of course on how much cash I throw at the DAC and amp) get just as good a result as with the Linn Majik DS?

The reason for going with a Linn DS or DSM (includes amp), is to take advantage of the implementation of its DAC.....otherwise there is no point.

I suggest that when the time comes, you listen to how it sounds as a complete source (or source/amp) vs Sonos + Dac, and pick which you prefer.

I have yet to hear better for the money (Sneaky / Majik DS), which is irrelevant.....but could make it good enough to make it onto a shortlist.

RE: Upgrade strategy

Can you get a home demo?

You may want to try some granite blocks under the speakers, I would not bother with ones from hifi shops either chopping boards or get some cut from a kitchen supplier.

Thanks, that confirms what I thought: it's really the DAC and amplification that's at issue, not the streaming capability. I will certainly give the Linn Majik DS a demo, perhaps up against Sonos through an Audiolab M-DAC (or similar) plus good amplification.

Home demoing not a problem: plenty of dealers near me will lend out top kit.

The granite block trick is on my list. Does it matter much what type of stone it is? Just that I have loads of suitably sized bits of sandstone to hand. Has anyone compared sandstone with granite? NO, DON'T GO THERE!  :hand:

I would say it's "more important"........as imo. the "transport" does have an effect.

Rather than get caught up in arguments over which (if any) is better, it makes sense just to compare them.

Streamers were debated here, and I gave my views from post 3: http://www.whathifi.com/forum/hi-fi/benefit-of-a-streamer?page=11

Point taken, my earlier post was an over-simplification. Looks like I need to devote a serious amount of time to comparison. :O

Given the size of your budget, this would make sense.

RE: Upgrade strategy RE: Upgrade strategy

I’ve now moved details of my system to the thread in my signature below. Anyone who’s interested can follow the fortunes of a series of upgrades that are due over the next few months.

Imminent demoes include: Musical Fidelity AMS35i, Primare A34.2 and Pre32, new Devialet range.

I’ve learnt a huge amount in a short time on this weird and wonderful forum. Many thanks to everyone. I’ve also benefited from some really fantastic advice in person from one of you: he knows who he is!
