my living room became overcrowded, speakers on stands, hifi seperates on a tower stand, shelves crammed with compact discs and L.P.s.So i invested with a Brennan JP7 and speakers, and gave my hifi system to my daughter. While i am satisfied with my JP7,and i know the CDs loaded are compressed to MP3 which i am told is inferior to CD,i wonder can the sound be improved with shelf speakers like the ones reviewed in the latest What hi fi sound and vision, for instance the Wharfdale diamond 121s

There's a lot of nonsense written about MP3, but pretty much anything from 192kbps upwards is fine.  You'll get more mileage out of finding good recordings and well mastered discs than fretting over the supposed inadequacies of MP3.

The new Wharfies will be good, but you can also get the Wharfedale 9.1 for under £100 and there's a few guys on here who really rate them.  They'll do your Brenna a treat.  See also Q Acoustics 2010 or 2020.

MP3 is a lossy format, therefore it takes part of the recording away to make the file smaller, (The lower the bit rate the more gets taken away) as to whether you will hear the difference will depend on your system and ears, (Go for 256K minimum though) therefore the best thing is to play a CD and then play the mp3 rip (Jump back and forth a few times) to see if you can hear a difference, if not stick with what you have got, if yes then go for something that rips to a lossless format like FLAC. (Just make sure you have something that can read the file type you rip to)

Hope this helps

He doesn't, he has a Brennan.
