I live in Tel-Aviv, they tax us like crazy around here... Heard about the Accuphase but it should cost more or less the same as the MF.
Anyway tomorrow I should probably teturn the demo unit to the dealer, and begin two negotiation sessions, with the dealer about the price and with my wife to allow me buying the amp...
Indeed addictive staff. If the Luxman will give me a golden ticket to your club, I may go for it, but to be at the decision making forum , I will try getting the MF first. I could not believe it controlled the 1028be better than the 200w m6i, which sounds ok too, but the ams takes the sound sideways converting my focal to B&W-like sound
Nice talking to you folks,
OK, good luck, especially clearing it with the good lady!
If the dealer does happen to have a class A Accuphase at a similar price, , you owe it to yourself to at least take a listen.
Review here; http://dagogo.com/accuphase-e-550-integrated-amplifier-review
The E550 has recently been superceeded by the E560 so there might be a bargain to be had.
Accuphase E350 amp, Electrocompaniet EMC1UP CDP, Siltech 25th Classic anniversary 330I XLR Harbeth Super HL5 on Sound Anchor Quod ELS63 stands, Chord Odessey2 speaker cable. Grado SR60 headphones.
The dealer does not carry the accuphase in his store, however the Luxman dealer (different dude) will pay me a visit during the week, so probably I will be able to compare the two amps side by side.
For now the AMS35 is still at my apartment. Are you guys sure only 50 of them were ever made?
AMS 35i vs 590AX is a bake off (literally!) that I'd like to hear the result of.
As for your question......I suspect not:
The original black versions had a black volume knob. I suspect what Neuphonix was told, is that they won't make them again until they can make a run of 50 (which they don't think will sell in the current climate).
Over here, I am fairly sure they will be made to order.....so I'm not sure what's going on, unless they have a different policy outside Europe - where they may want to send batches of at least 50, in order to save on transport.
"Everything has been said before, but since nobody listens we have to keep going back and beginning all over again." André Gide
Will update about the comparison toward the end of the week probably.
I heard the 590AX at the dealer's shop last week with different speakers (livingvoice I think), and it sounded little clinical to my ears, though I think it had slightly better resolution than the ams35. The unit however was quite new and did not complete its full break in period. I think I prefer the warmer sound of the ams with the focals, which are very resolving speakers.. the match of the focals with the ams is so good, I can not let it go
Will keep you posted.
.... the match of the focals with the ams is so good, I can not let it go
Neuphonix and Iceman would certainly agree with you there.
OK, look forward to your impressions.
One other thing to bare in mind re the Accuphase... supposed to be a great match with Focal, particularly the 1028.
You're as bad as me......maybe worse!
Just learning from the Master! LOL!
Seriously though, now owning the likes of Accuphase and the EMC1UP, I now know how you feel with your beliefs in the MF and Linn and just want others to share our musical enjoyment... whatever the OP does end up with, he will have a superb set up.
When you're right............you write.
[/quote]Im glad you liked the combination of the AMS35i and 1028be. Getting an Electrocompaniet EMC 1UP will make things sound even better>)
Electrocompaniet EMC 1UP / Musical Fidelity AMS 35i / Focal Electra 1028be / MIT AVt MA speaker cable-Matrix 12 xlr / Chord powerchord / GIK acoustics/ Sennheiser Momentum
Just to clarify what I was told at the time by MF. The lady I spoke to was head of international sales so this might only be their international policy not UK. However given the size of the company, I'd have to think that it is highly unlikely that they would be making one off units for their UK customers & putting their international customers on hold.
MF produce the amps in runs of 50 at a time and were not planning on doing any more runs at the time (September last year) as 50 new units represented 10 years worth of stock given the current economic conditions. This may have just been a figure (the number of years) that she plucked out of thin air to emphasise her point.
Presumably the production runs of 50 applied to both silver & black, however I didn't ask. I was looking for a black one & there were none left, silver was still available. So any discussion around the 35i no longer being available might have been slightly misleading, what I should have said was that black ones might be hard to come by. She certianly didn't say that they would NEVER be made again, just that at the moment they couldn't justify the cost given present demand. So who knows, in time there may well be another run of units, let's hope so.
The context of the discussion was that we were both seeking an immediate resolution to my dilema & a black 35i was not going to be readily supplied. It's funny though, I've always been a black only man as far as my AV/Hi-fi equipment is concerned. However I have to say that the silver kit has really grown on me, more suave, not so typical. Really helps that it is an understated matt grey type of silver & not shiny chrome.
If you're in doubt give them a call on their main switch number, then press 1 to be put through to international sales. Even though my experience was initially far from satisfactory, they came through in the end. I think my frustration came more from their distributor here in Sydney rather than MF themselves.
Mute, I would say go for it, the 35i is a fantastic mtach with Focal, the warmth balances the forward sound nicely IMO. Once you have it in place you'll never look back.
One thing I have found over Summer down here is that the heat produced is astounding, really looking forward to Winter! This is a product definitely engineered by pommies who are used to, how shall I say it, less than perfect weather?!
MF AMS-Primo / MF AMS-35P / Linn Akurate DS / Kef Reference 205/2 / Krix Epicentrix / Focal Dome 2 / JL Audio Fathom F110 & F112 / Yamaha RX-Z7 / Oppo Nuforce BDP-93 / PS3
Very Subtly put Neuphonix lol!... blooming freezing here in blighty and it's supposed to be British Summer time now!
I think Mute has had the AMS on home demo for a few days, so hopefully he knows by now how hot the AMS does get... way hotter than my Sugden even! I did hear, don't know how true it is, Accuphase Class A don't amit such great amounts of heat.
Thanks for the info. Indeed I have the ams for a couple of days. For now I compared it with the m6i, and actually realized how good the m6i is... great dynamics, bass controll and it sounds very realistic.
But with the focals, the ams really shines. I do not think I will be able to return it... do not feel like checking the Luxman at all... do not care about the heat that much... if I can get a good price, I will take it.
IMO. Viable alternatives are always worth checking.......especially if they are cheaper (and made by Luxman).
If you can get a home dem, there is nothing to lose........Oh, and there is the fact that some on here would like to know the result.
OK, excellent! Like I say, you would've had a superb set up with whichever of the amps mentioned paired with the Focals.
As a matter of interest, what source do you use?
