Happy new year everybody!
Have a look at this link. If his research is pukka then we have been taken for a ride for many a year regarding the fact that the more a CD player costs the better it is!
I am only posting this because I am looking for a Cd player to act as a transport for my Rega Dac. I was fully intending to get the Rega Apollo to compliment the Dac and a Rega Brio R,but this aticle has made me think do I need to spnd all tha money on a CD player if itis only going to act as a transport. His research implies that the use of a cheap DVD player would beno worse than a £10,000 player.......I am sure this cannot be true ....or is it?
I would be interested on your thoughts on this please. Here is the link...its a facinating read...
Also I am undecided about speakers to go with this system..ie, Rega Brio R amp,Rega Dac and probably an Apollo Cd player. Can you give your thoughts and feelings regarding speakers that really sing with this equipment. Regards.
Plese excuse the awful spelling /grammer in my post above....I am a bit the worse for wear after seeing the New year in!
hi there, well I haven't read the article. I do know for a fact that digital transports make a difference, be it cd players, streamers and computers. Each transport imparts some qualities to the dac be it timing, detail level or soundstaging. Before I say anything else I would like to tell you that I too did not believe that transports make a difference. However, as I had the chance to try out and own better and more revealing kit the differences became clearer each time. Don't you think that if dacs made all the difference that manufacturers would have just spent all their money on a dac and just used a pc cdrom to do the reading? If your only source is cd then I would recommend spending your budget on the cd player instead of getting a cheap transport and an expensive dac. You can always add a dac later on to upgrade the cdp. If cd is not the only source then you could get a very excellent cd player off fleabay via the second hand route. I myself have got a Marantz cd 63 KI 2 and afterwards sold my Marantz PM 5004 because the older cd player just knocked the socks off it.
If you are looking for speakers for an all rega setup why not try speakers from Rega as well?
Denon DNP-720AE network streamer, Mordaunt Short Mezzo 6, Cayin A-55 T, Technics-SLQ210, Denon DP-29F turntable, 540p, Dac-magic, Marantz 5004CD and 6025 Turntable, Mac ,Pure AV interconnects, QED Revelation speaker cables, QED Performance interconnects.
Akg K702, Grado SR60i, UE Triple-fi, Musical Fidelity X-cans, HRT Music Streamer 2+
There's a bit more to it all than that... you might find this interesting
I used to use a Marantz CD6004 as a transport with my Rega DAC - It sounded very good.... however I bought an Apollo R CDP and this has taken things to another level - WOW it sounds incredible - never thought it would sound any better.
As for speakers the Regas work very well with ther Brio R but try at home if you can as I couldnt get the Neat Motives to work at home but they sounded fantastic at the shops demo room.
I love my system, dont see the need to change anything anytime soon apart from a better turntable!
Synology DS212j > Rega DAC > Rega Brio R > Rega RS1
Rega RP6 / Exact
Chord Chameleon Plus / Odyssey 2
Panasonic TX-P50 GT50 > BDP110e > Yamaha RX-V 667 > Rega Vox
I agree cd players do sound different, when I upgraded from a Technics cd to the Marantz 63SE there was a huge difference. Now from what I have read the transports are similar, so I agree there but the DACs are different and other components. I also tend to agree spending loads on the cd player is not worth it. I was thinking of upgrading my 63SE but thought adding a DAC like the Rega would be the answer I will be testing one in the next few weeks. Now they say DACS don't make much difference?
These kind of posts are getting incredibly tedious, with the same kind of stuff rehashed and repeated week after week, month after month, and nearly every time a new similar thread comes along, the person who starts it thinks they're the first.
Expensive speaker cables are a con, let's argue. Expensive interconnects are a con, let's argue. Mains-conditioning devices and specialist mains cables are a con, let's argue. Specialist supports for your electronics are a con, let's argue. Expensive HDMI cables are a con, let's argue. Expensive USB cables are a con, let's argue. All CD players sound the same, discuss (even though they very obviously don't). All amps sound the same, let's discuss (even though they very obviously don't). Different CD transports don't influence the sound. Streamers are better than DACs attached to computers. DACs attached to computers are better than streamers. WHF tests are worthless because they're not double-blind. High-res music is a con.
What other regular contentious issue have I missed that we can perhaps get over and done with?
Main gear: Mac Mini > HRT Streamer II+ > Marantz PM66 KI > Mission 794
Also cluttering-up the place:
Thorens TD160 no cartridge; Marantz CD63 mkII KI; Technics SL-P777; Cyrus 2 + PSX; Cyrus Tuner; Nakamichi DR-1
Go and try a Rega DAC you wont be dissapointed!
Putting out fire with gasoline
Major Fubar whatever your name is....I suggest you get over yourself mate.
I am brand new to this forum and I havnt the foggiest idea what has and hasnt been discussed on here before so before you blow a gasket so early in the morning....all I was wondering was if there was anything in the guys research as I am about to purchase a new CD player and what he is suggesting really puts the cat amongst the pigeons so to speak and if true may have an influence on what people may spend on a CD player used primarilly as a transport.
Happy new year!
Is that the 5 minute argument or the full half hour?
Amplification: Creek Evolution 5350 with Creek Sequel 40 plug in phono stage
Speakers: Epos Elan 30
Sources: Arcam CD17 - Squeezebox Touch - PC via optical into FiiO D3 DAC
Turntable: Rega Planar P3 with Ortofon 2M Blue cart on RB300 tonearm
Various bits of wire supplied by Mark Grant and Van Damme
Well best to demo some, try Marantz 6004 and Rega cd players and see the different, as you have a Rega dac already it may not be that great. As for speakers Im considering a similar sytem and for my room the Rega RS1 sound the top choice, small room, fair low volumn. Depends on your room, music and volumns etc. I can give you list of other speakers to try but if you give us more info. Do you want stand or floor speakers etc.
Thanks BigH for a more mature response!
I am not too fussed re speakers.I have the room for both stand mount and smallish floorstanders. I have read lots of good reviews re the Epos Epic 2 and 5,and am also lead to believe that Regas own speakers match well as do Neat.( motive 2 and 3)Plus the KEF R range looks good. The LS50 intrigues me but would the brio drive it to its full potential given the low sensitivity of that speaker? Can you think of any others that might fit the bill that I can audition? My budget is around £!000 for the speakers
I would read the "your opinions" on the LS50, not the Whathifi review but the ones by people who have heard them, many negative ones. I think the Regas are easy to drive. The thing with floor standers I think they need a fair amount of space and them, like 18inchs from the wall and away from corners. The Regas are not fussy, not sure about your other choices. Can you demo them, I would and then get a home demo if possible as room makes a big difference not just size but whats in it or wood floorboards v concrete, carpets v wood etc.
What sort of music?
The Major has a point but maybe the forum structure promotes these arguments? Sticky threads? Separate topics for those non proven or contentious issues where new members could trawl through the arguments, advice & references? I too get 'tired' of the same arguments but at the same time welcome & respect those newer members wishing for forsight, advice, enlifhtenment & abuse
