A pair of Quested monitors (forget the model) in a studio environment.
I agree they all sound exellent. The little S5R model seemed to struggle a bit too much at higher volumes though. I expect they would probably cope better when used with the matching 10" subwoofer which I haven't heard.
The best in the Quested S range is the S7R model IMO. The best in the Quested V range is the V2108 which to my ears sounded almost identical to the more expensive three way V3110. The specs say the V3110 go much louder and a little bit deeper but under real life listening conditions (and volume levels) I struggled to tell them apart.
Some of the really big speakers they do like to ones which have two large excursion 15" bass drivers in each speaker just looked plain frightening.

There is a Mercury Edition of the V2108 (as I found on this Dutch website), that looks... um... less ugly that the plain black ones. Can't find pictures with grills in place... Any idea what they cost?
A bit of googalage shows that they can be picked up for £3240 at the moment.
I'm not too certain about this but I think that you can order their smaller S series speakers either with or without grills. Those V2108 are hardly what you'd call small though - they're big square cubes in that are the same shape as my AVI N5 subwoofer only slightly larger! Not what you want perched on top of speaker stands.
Pioneer DV-668, ATC MU-6 (6 channel professional pre amplifier), SCM100ASL (FL & FR), C6ASL (C), SCM50 (RL & RR) and a C6 Sub. Fantastic resolution and simply effortless at any listening level.
All the best

An Olive 4HD/Naim DAC front end, DNM pre/mono's with Spendor A6's initially and then Harbeth P3ESR's (and a Nordost cable loom). Best system I've ever heard or owned - just too many boxes and cables to live with in the long term.

Steve, where did you hear the Quested monitors? I would love to hear them and see if they are any improvement on the Kord monitors (Vulcan and Tornado) that use the same 8" Volt Mid-Bass and a Scanspeak tweeter (rather than the Morel in the Quested) . You could DIY a version those V2108s for around £600 all in I recon.

I have a few:
Classe monoblocs/preamp/cd player(can't remember the model)
Cyrus Mono X300/Stream XP2QX/CDSTSE2
Vienna Acoustics BBG
And for home cinema, B&W CT800 system, with a ridiculous amount of Classe amps and the Kaleidoscape system.
Well done Matt for lightening the mood.
In the early 90's I had to have the loan of an Onyx OA31 amp while my old Cyrus was in for repair and had it paired with a Marantz MK II and some B&W CM1 speakers, so not exactly high end, but some how the SQ had amazing depth and detail... been trying to replicate it ever since.
Think I might have got there now
Accuphase E350 amp, Electrocompaniet EMC1UP CDP, Siltech 25th Classic anniversary 330I XLR Harbeth Super HL5 on Sound Anchor Quod ELS63 stands, Chord Odessey2 speaker cable. Grado SR60 headphones.
It was in one of the pro audio shops in London. I forget the name though because I visited loads of hifi and pro audio shops when I was last there.
I think it would be more tricky than you think to make a DIY version of these. The drivers and cabinets would be simple enough but from what I read Quested have some very talented electionics engineers working for them. These V2108 speakers are a second generation total redesign and they have put a lot of work into the new amplifiers. I bet the crossovers, dip switches and subwoofer integration have had an awful lot of development work put into them too.
In the pro audio world Quested are highly respected and are up there with the likes of Adam and Genelec. The famous Hollywood movie soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer swears by them.
Well, with regards to the crossover/DIP switches, Sub integration etc you can get that all with DSP in the form of seperate boards very cheap or an all in one solution like the Hypex AS2.100 plate amps. Mind the price has gone up a little, might be nearer £700
Heard nothing but good things about Quested though, they generally seem good VFM for what you get.
Monday night music club here at work, put together a nice spread.

So far, in my experience, the best overall perfoming system I have heard.
A good mid-range system that I enjoy. Some good mid-range head-fi for when I get banished to the spare-room.
Oh, and access to true high-end 7 days a week.
I'd quite like to have a go at building some DIY active speakers one day when I have some spare time. Probably by using six of the amplifiers in an AV receiver to drive a pair of home made three way speakers.
I once built a pair of 15" subwoofers when I was a kid. It was a very simple job though, they were just simple sealed enclosures with a bit of internal bracing. The enclosure was made to the volume recommended by the driver manufacturer and the proportions were calculated using the 'golden ratio' method. A local DIY shop cut the MDF to size for me and all I needed to do was screw and glue them together. They worked well though and went bloody loud.
Best system I ever heard was over 30 years ago at Nytech Audio Chew Magna which consisted of a Linn LP12,Grace arm,Supex cartridge,Nytech pre-amp ,6 Nytech power amps driving a pair of Linn Isobarik speakers music played was Pink Floyd sounded fantastic.
Main AV Setup: Panasonic 50VT65 TV, Pioneer Bdp-lx71, Pioneer Vsx-lx70, B&W FPM Series, B&W PV1, Optimum AV300 AV Stand, QED Silver Anniversary XT Speaker Cable & Chord Silver Plus HDMI Cables. Gadgets: iPad Air & iPhone 5S
I'm feeling a bit like that at the moment. Okay, the system I mentioned earlier in the thread is inordinately more accomplished than what I'm currently listening to but I'm really enjoying my music at present and I honestly think my current hotch-potch is producing a more involving and enjoyable sound than most of the stuff I've had.
