Good news folks...
I have ordered the Icon audio pre and power amp combo of the LA4mk3 and MB845's (mk2 signature).
To accompany them i will use a Marantz SA15s2 LE for cd/sacd.
I am now looking for speakers. The Tannoys are still high priority but i have heard that they are abit closed in and slow sounding from the dealer i bought the amps off. This seems to be at odds with what ive read and of course he doesnt sell these speakers so perhaps my cynical side isnt surprised about what he said.
However he is overwhelmingly enthusiastic about a brand of speaker called ART. They are fully handmade in Scotland and they have a new speaker about to launch a full 1 metre 3 way floorstander with 8in bass, mid and tweeter by SEAS. The suggestion has been made for him to send a demo pair with the icon audios in about 2 weeks so i can try them and return them if i dont like them which is fair enough.
So all in all i am very excited but must contain myself after the last disappointment. I dont anticipate any problems this time around so keep watching this space. If anyone else has speaker suggestions for valve power amps i'd love to hear them!
Excellent news... CJSF has Icon amps and enjoying them very much.
ART are supposed to be a superb speaker, but not cheap! do you know much this new model will be?
Accuphase E350 amp, Electrocompaniet EMC1UP CDP, Siltech 25th Classic anniversary 330I XLR Harbeth Super HL5 on Sound Anchor Quod ELS63 stands, Chord Odessey2 speaker cable. Grado SR60 headphones.
ART have a very good reputation, though I haven't heard them.
You have a great amp, so make sure you only buy speakers if you can hear them on the end of it.
Hi-Fi World matched the 845s with Kef R500s in it's review in their December edition to great effect......they found it worked really well, but needed the outer bung of the Kefs in place, to tame the bass.
I also think you should consider Kef Refs, as these mono blocks have considerable power on tap, and would (sonically) work well with them (imo).

Hey guys i believe the ART speakers are to retail at £6k which is over budget of £5k but the dealer may be prepared to do a deal. I will wait and see how they sound.
Re the Kefs i have read so much good about the R series (only heard the R100 which surprised me with how full they sound) that they do tempt me as i could use the remains of the budget towards essentials plus the signature sound of these R series sounds to my taste. However i fell i would want R700 as minimum or R900 for the bass
The 205/2 reference are indeed well specced CNO but at £6k i cannot afford unless i find ex-demo/2nd hand.
Also considering Spendor A9 ex-demo at £3k with a decent 8inch sub with speaker level connections . Well regarded speakers it seems and work well with valve amps.
Still toying with the PB1i but worried the Icons wont drive them. Suppose i can try get a home demo.
Kef may still be doing the trade in offer as listed here: http://www.lyrichifi.com/special-offers/special-offers.html
That would leave the 205/2s costing £4700 (and the 203/2s £3199)
FWIW. I think the R700s are the sweetspot of that range.
I think they will drive them fine, but always better to check.
The only criticism of the Icon, is a slightly looser bass than you would get from a SS amp, so bear this in mind when speaker matching.
Have to say that trade in looks mighty good value for a pair of 205's.
Need to move on my MA BX2's!
Will ring them tomorrow. Hope that i qualify.
It's a Kef offer, so your nearest Kef dealer should be able to do it (you really need to hear them with the Icon)............I used that link as an example (but Michael of Lyric is excellent).
Edit. Any luck?
Hey CNO it is about 2 weeks until i will have the amps and CDP. I will first hear the ART speakers that the dealer will let me try at home, then i will look into the Kef 205, Tannoy Kens SE and Spendor A9.
Looking forward to the outcome!
I look forward to how you get on.
It is vital that you hear them all on the end of your new amp.
Still waiting megatombomb!
Just to let you know guys all i now have all the goodies.
Just got to find a place to put them all. The power amps are 33kg each, the speakers 30kg each, even the battleship build CDP feels like about 15kg - i am knackered. It may be not until the weekend until i get to hear them due to work etc but i am damned excited. Having fun placing the valves in the amps at the mo.
I really need to find a proper support rack for the amps/CDp now.
Just a reminder the system consists of Marantz SA15S2le CDP into Icon Audio LA4 mk3 pre into 2 x Icon Audio MB845mk2 power amps. The speakers i have on home demo are a brand new model (not even on the company website yet!) by ART called the 'prestige 8'.
I am drooling at the prospect of hearing it all!
Look forward to your thoughts once set up.
I think you are in for a treat.......and make sure you try a variety of speakers before settling on the final winner.
