Subwoofer only works with speakers set to 'small'
Hi,
Please forgive my lack of knowledge in advance. I'm a 'geek' but only just entering the world of audio.
I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V367 amp/receiver and some Tannoy Mercury V1 speakers.
I then got lucky and found a Tannoy FX 5.1 subwoofer for sale about 3 streets away from my house so snapped it up for £20.
I've plugged it in using an RCA cable from my amp's subwoofer socket to the right input on the 'low level' part of the sub.
I then turn 'Subwoofer > Yes' on the amp's settings but the sub doesn't kick in.
However, when I turn the speakers from 'Large' to 'Small' in the settings the bass disappears entirely from the speakers and the sub kicks in.
Whilst I am assuming this is relatively normal I was wondering if it's possible to maintain the bass portion of the speakers as well as the sub. It seemed to me that 'sub > yes' should kick it in irrelevant of whether the speakers are set to large/small.
Many thanks in advance.
Thanks for the response.
I was hoping it was possible to send the lower frequencies to both the speakers and the sub somehow.
Does it kick in a higher volumes, or not at all?
It doesn't seem to, certainly not within the volume I could acceptably listen to it at without bursting my eardrums.
I will check if anything comes through tonight at very high volume.
You can set the main speakers to small just set the crossover point to the sub at 40hz instead of the default 80hz. ?So now only the lowest bass notes will be handled by the sub.
Also check that you have the volume /gain knob turned up on you sub.
Forgive me but the last response is not going to help. I've set up a system with the FX sat speakers and they generate very little bass. Setting the crossover to 80, let alone 40 will give you no low end. The crossover needs to be set to 140. Raise the levels of each speaker manually to around +5 and make sure your speakers are set to small. Be realistic, the sat speakers are designed to work with a sub not to help out with the bass.
He's only using the FX sub. The speakers he mentions are Mercury V1s.
Check the manual on the receiver. I know my Onkyo has a 'double bass' setting which sends bass to both the full range speakers and sub if I so wished. Yours may well have a similar setting.

Ah, sorry, miss-read the post. Still, 80hz max for the crossover and speakers set to small.
Have you measured the distances to your usual listening position, from each of your speakers, including the sub?
I assume you have the ability to make these adjustments, within your AVR. Do you have a sound level meter? And does your sub have phase, gain and xover controls?
If you are able to set accurate distances for all your speakers, also run white noise to allow levels to be set with the meter. Then you set the sub xover to a couple of DB higher than your sats roll off frequency. Also set the phase control to just above minimum. this is about the most accurate way to set up a sub/sat array.
Otherwise its an awfull lot of trial and error.
I just returned to post that I had resolved the issue and saw an entire wealth of helpful answers. The one from Big Chris is exactly what I managed to find.
In the config there was an 'extra bass' setting which kicked the sub in even with speakers set to 'large'. I definitely prefer the sound delivered as a result.
In answer to others, I used the YPAO microphone system to allow it to calibrate itself which seems to work out speaker distances, levels and etc.
I will be sure to delve into the other suggestions made here but for now I'm extremely pleased.
Thanks you all.

If you set your speakers to "large", the lower frequencies are handled by the speakers as well, & so the sub has little work to do. Setting the speakers to "small" diverts the lower frequencies to the sub.
