Hi guys, I'm after a pair of floor standing speakers to be positioned either side of my tv. Problem is the left hand speaker will be in a corner (maximum 20-30cm from the corner), and the right hand close to a wall. My budget is £650, room size 5m x 3.6m

Any idea's?

The speakers will be powered by a Yamaha RX-A1020. I was intially looking at Q Acoustic's 2050i, Monitor Audio BX5 and BX6's

cheers

I think that kind of placement will always bloat the bass (not in a good way) and may impact on imaging. Traditionally closed box speakers are best for these situations, or if you have to use a ported speaker, maybe one with front ports.

IIRC, the FEF Q500 is a sealed box design, but I've never heard it, so don't know how it performs, let alone with that kind of placement.

Agreed front ported or closed. I use my MS 8's with port bungs and 2.1 and some corner bass traps. I have no bloated bass problems but in a small room I guess u need to work harder to acieve great results. Auditions from a short list has to be the best option I guess.

I would avoid monitor audio in your situation. If my speakers are placed right in a corner there is bass boom and if they are placed close the back wall the bass increases but this seems to cause the mid range to sound closed in. I have mine about 18" from the back wall which sounds very good. Unfortunately for you most floor standing speakers sound best with a little free space but I understand that you can't do much about your living space. Sealed or front ported would be your best bet but you may stil get bass boom especially in the corner position. Maybe you could use bass traps like robin if it causes you a problem.

Why get floorstanders anyway, at that price and room lay-out (size) I would go for stand mounts, floorstanders tend to be more boomy anyway.

Surely if you are using an AV amp, then to spend a lot of money on speakers is a complete waste. An AV amp will never do them justice.

If you plan to get a seperate hifi amp later to partner the speakers then perhaps, but you will need a pre out on your av setup to route it's front channels. Sounds like your room is compromised by size even if you go down this path, as such I would consider quality bookshelfs (if worried about booming) and a sub if really needed.

Depends what you are using the system for, if AV I guess considering amp price then spend big on a centre speaker. Possible you can get room dampening / move the furniture around, or move house. It's hard to know how to answer with so many unknowns.

Rega RS3 or RS5. They are front ported and Rega claims they can be put quite close to the back wall and have the reputation to be easily placed, even in complex environment. Lateral bass driver can be put outside or inside. If on a corner, put inside then.

Was going to mention RS3, my RS1 work very well up against a back wall - also my right speaker is 9" from back wall and 13" from sidewall toed in and placed on Atacama SE24 stands - they sound great even though the RS1 is rear ported

A lot of people of people with RS3 tend to find the lateral driver facing inwards yields the best result!

that yamaha rx-a1020 would probably dump on all the sub 1000pound stereo amps you could name when set up right.

I would not worry too much about bass boom, you have tone controls on that amp and can adjust bass levels according to the accoustics of your room turn the bass right down then turn it up slow, till you get the desired effect......
