Speakers for - Cyrus DAC XP+, Mono X 300's
Dear forum members,
I currently have just bought the Cyrus DAC XP+ and am in the process of approching my local dealer to buy the Mono X300s. (I am only buying these due to the size and necessary space saving in our living space)
Now I used to own Musical Fidelity KW equipment which was dynamic, bold and entertaining. I realise the Cyrus house sound is different, but what speakers should I get to have similar musical entertainment?
I currently will be using these on some Monitor Audio PL300's once we have everything setup. I know a lot of people dont like the MA Cyrus combo, so Im asking for alternatives I can look at.
Speakers should ideally be less than £5000.
Thanks
Two brands highly recommended for Cyrus are Spendor and Vienna Acoustics, although I would also give the PL300's a good listen before spending serious money.

+1 Vienna Acoustics
I think the PL300s work really well with the Cyrus Monos. You could also try alternatives from Proac and PMC.
PMC PB1i, Beethoven baby grands, I found the small tweeter on the ProAcs too hissy when matched with cyrus but may be toned down with the 140's as they have 2 mid/bass drivers.. Apart from that they are superb.
If you're after new speakers then VA Baby Beethoven Grands, if I could get the chance to try them with my DAC XP+ and X300s. So maybe best that I can't
THe Cyrus have definitely improved my CM8s, significantly increasing the bass especially, plus giving more definition all round. So give them a try with your existing speakers first and see what improvement they can offer to what you have already.
Others that I've been recommended are KEF R700s and PMC 20/24s.
Anyone tried them with B&W 803s? (They would be my dream speakers if I could fit them in the house)
I have the DAC-XP+ and the X300's. I would agree with all of the above that you should listen to them with your current speakers before considering changing them.
I like the Spendor sound - so I eventually got some ex-demo Spendor Statements which I think are wonderful. The combination, to my ears, sound better than any other system I have heard.
But to open up another can of worms - I believe Cyrus is sensative to the types of cables you use. I tried Chord and Tellorium and preferred the Tellorium. But many people disagree with the affects of different cables and there are many other threads with discussions.
Just it is worth considering.
Do you feel that your Cyrus system can't sound dynamic and bold? Strap yourself in, and Blutack down your best china
The X300's are amazing power amps with a hell of a lot of grip and dynamics - don't be fooled by their size! They never sound restricted and are more than a match for the Bryston 4Bsst2 (one of my favourite power amps) for example. They're leagues ahead of the old Mono X's.
Speakers that have worked well with the X300's have been the PMC OB1i's and the Dynaudio Focus 340's, but the best combos I've heard have been with the ProAc Response D28's and KEF Reference 205/2's. These latter two pairings are quite different as the ProAc sounds warmer and more pleasing, the sort of sound you can relax to, whereas the Reference is all about dynamics and impact. Both have decent bass depth, but the bass on the Reference is more neutral and faster, and extremely punchy.
Once you have your system up and running, I'd loan a PSX-R from your dealer and try it on your DACxp+...
Thanks to all for your responses.
If the Monitor Audio PL range doesnt work as I'd like, then im very interested in testing them with the Kef reference, ProAc & PMC Ranges.
I hope I am pleasently surprised in the middle of Feb when everything's up and running properly.
We havent talked about the PSX-R upgrades but thanfully as all the boxes are small, we are able to accomodate a few more boxes in our limited area for equipment. It also makes store demo's much easier as I can easily transport the new amps.
Check out my blog on Cyrus with Vienna Acoustics.
Im running a prexpdqx and mono x200s with b&w cm9 speakers. I am also looking to upgrademy speakers this year. One should not forget to take into account the room they will go in, in terms of its size, shape, and acoustics.
I occasionally spend half an hour dreaming about getting the B&W 802 diamonds, while most people, my dealer included, talk me out of it as they would be too overpowering for my 4m x 5m room.
Actually, my local dealer out here in Switzerland has been designing and making his own speakers for the past couple of years. I was fairly sceptical... how could he and his manufacturing partner really make a good speaker compared to B&W who presumably spend a great deal of money on R&D and have a great deal of expertise.
That was, until I had a demo of his speakers up against 804 Diamonds. Personally, I way preferred my dealers speakers. I am also not the only one, I think he has sold about 20 pairs now. I am about to start the demoing process for new speakers myself, my budget up to about £6k myself. I really think there is a good chance I will end up with my dealers speakers in my room.
I've got the XP+ and X300's and have the top Spendor Statement speakers. They are a perfect match in my opinion.
There are some e-demo's on e-bay at the moment at very reasonable prices. Try and find a dealer with them - or if you are close enough to the sellers - try and audition them

I used to use a pair of Mark 1 ProAc Studio 140s with my dual mono mode Cyrus X-powers, all fed by Cyrus X-series stuff upstream. Speaker cables were 2 runs of Chord Odyssey-4 4-core cable, with 2 conductors per "plus" and "minus". I found the ProAcs an excellent combination with the Cyrus gear, significantly helping to flesh out the Cyrus sound, variusly described as "thin" or "detailed" depending on whether the author is being nasty or nice.
Just saying.

I was going to suggest this, but thought it a bit outside budget.........great choice though.

I am not quite sure why you are in a hurry to look for alternatives.
If you haven't yet heard the PL300s with the X300s I would hold your horses, you may just be very pleasantly surprised.
