Re: Roksan Kandy 2 AMP 'To Bright'

I find the Sound of MS to be...how to explain...like a witch casting a spell on me..leaves me spellbound and make me want to go for them .Those old MS15 how would you compare to the actual range?

The MS15s were a long time ago and would, if memory serves me correctly, sound boxy compared to the newer models. The other ones I've had are 914i floorstanders, and 902i (which I've still got in my study). The Mezzos are a big step forward from the 9 series. They are more refined and much better balanced.

I understand what you say about MS speakers casting a spell. They are very very musical speakers.

If you have a CDP or amp that tends towards brightness then you need to avoid metal dome tweeters in my view. Can get really harsh. Having read this thread I think you will need to sell one of the items unfortunately.

A bit off topic but why did you sack the 740a/c combo if you don't mind me asking Matthew? The 840a/c came with free kef iq5ses. The chap in the shop said he'd be happy for me to have mezzo 2s instead and I think I may take him up on the offer after listening to them.

I really don't know now to be honest. I think I thought they were slightly clinical, but I was only using MS914i speakers with them and I'm sure they would have come into their own with the Mezzos if only I had been sensible enough to try them then, instead of chucking the baby out with the bathwater. I got some mad idea in my head that I could massively improve on them, which was wrong. What I ended up with was just different and, in many ways, not as good.

You live and learn I suppose.

I would not say so: the M16i have metal tweeters, but the treble is still smooth and clear. But maybe we have different pereferences Smile

This is the trouble when you try and buy a mid range system.  I wish What Hi Fi would put a page together of what goes with what.  That would be really helpful.

If your are reading What Hi Fi, then there is a tip to help us readers out here.

I think there's a simple reason why this is very difficult to achieve. Everyone has a different room, taste, expectation and need. The combo of amp, CDP and speakers needs to work for you in your room for your music. Only trial and error will solve this little equation.

Agreed. Trouble is that trial and error can get expensive and you can do so much of it that you end up not knowing when to stop. You always think you can get that little bit better!!

Re: Roksan Kandy 2 AMP 'To Bright'

i agree - just think about the award winners at WHF (Roksan / Cyrus) - some people love them but others are much much less enthusiastic

you need to find the sound that suits you and your room - going and buying 5* winners may work but equally can lead to disaster - WHF really likes the lean and bright components which may not be your own taste

however building a system can be fun once you start to know what you want - it does get easier, but like many here i have not arrived at my current system in one hit - i have bought and sold and learnt - fortunately quite quickly :)

read reviews carefully as they will give you clues by the descriptions and also dont just use one source of information either

haha, yeah, therein lies the problem (or opportunity if you're on the dark side) with hifi. I'm just fortunate that I found speakers I like without much effort. OK, so it took me two pairs of Monitor Audio speakers to get there but that's only because I'm tight Big Smile

If I'm listening to music then there's a good chance I have the laptop on my lap. Clearly from my post count I listen to a lot of music...

Ok, I agree there must be many varibles when listening to music, but there must must 'safe' Amp & 'Speaker' mid range packages out there that suit the majority of tastes?

I mean reading all the advice on this blog, a lot of the readers generally know what goes with what, so surely What Hi Fi could do a 'not carved in stone' article about which amps and speakers go together!

Also not everyone has got the time and the money to test all the different combinations of amps and speakers, What Hi Fi do touch on sometimes about what to shy away from on some Amps.

If you are reading this What Hi Fi could you not consider doing an article on system matching!!  You do articles on everything else, and a lot of people put their faith and money in your reviews.

Re: Roksan Kandy 2 AMP 'To Bright'

Well, to start off:

Cambridge Audio + Mordaunt-Short
Creek + Epos
Rotel + B&W
NAD + Dali
NAD + Q Acoustics
Arcam + Dynaudio
Arcam + Dali
Cyrus + Spendor
Denon + Epos
Naim + Neat

Trouble is, even with such synergy, there will be people for whom these combinations aren't right.
