I would like to dip my toe into the murky waters (to me ) of classical music. I really like the sound of cello, flute and obe so could anyone recommend some pieces featuring these instuments or even all three at once ?

My knowledge of classical is very limited so if you could be specific about the recordings (links ? ) it would be very much apprieciated . Thanks

I'm no expert but I did purcahse Alisa Weilerstein's cello concertos last week. The Elgar is really nice, not so sure about the Carter versions.

This is very difficult because "classical" in the broad way that the term is generally used covers several genres of music from the 16th century (or earlier) to the present day.  If I were to recommend something on the cello, for example, do I go with a Bach Cello Suite or a Shostakovich Cello Concerto or something inbetween?

Can you help us thin the field a little?  Is there anything that you have heard that you like?  We could then recommend things of the same type.

Chris

PS Here are two links to cello pieces where you can hear samples.  I'm not saying they are the best versions but just ones I found where you can listen!

All orchestral music will pretty much include some Cello, Oboe and Flute.  But there are concertos which feature these instruments as soloists accompanied by orchestra, as well as solo pieces like the Cello Suites already mentioned.

Lots of general recommendations here, and you can try before you buy somewhere like Spotify.

I'd suggest a Mozart Flute concerto or two, and maybe something featuring James Galway, an outstanding flautist; or for a more contemporary player, Emmanual Pahud.

For oboe, try Heinz Holliger or Nicholas Daniel's recordings.  Naturally, there are countless alternatives.

Happy Listening!

'Prelude a l'Apres midi d'un faune' by Debussy would be well worth a listen.  It is a short orchestral piece with an amazing range of tonal colours and some beautiful flute work.  Herbert Von Karajan's recording on Deutsche Grammophon (coupled with Debussy's wonderful 'La Mer') is my go-to for this music.

I'd also suggest the Dvorak Cello Concerto - a wonderful piece of music and beautifully played by Lynn Harrell in his recording on Decca or by Rostropovich on EMI.

I think this is the first recording he did. Second one is better. The third one that just was made now is a little bit special as a lower diapason was used (392Hz), making the cello sound a little bit more like a Viola da gambo.

If you like Cello, you should also try all the Viola da gambo repertoir, try some Jordi Savall sacd, the sound usually is simply breathtaking. But that's not classical music, but rather well baroque or pre-baroque. I can only but heartly recommend you Dispora Sefardi and Armenian Spirit (AliaVox).

And don't forget Paolo Pandolfo too, that recorded a beautiful Fantasias for the viols, Purcell, and the Drexel Manuscript, from Carl Friedrich Abel.

All these are really audiophile recordings and very beautiful music too (I firstly buy music and listen to music, now, if the recording and production can be as good as possible, that's a plus)

And just to finish with something totally different, the Four last Lieder of R. Strauss, by Lucia Popp... Amazing to tears.

Anything with Jacqueline du Pré playing cello and Daniel Barenboim (who she married) conducting.

I also don't think you can go wrong with The Magic Flute by Mozart, which is a bit like pantomime for grown-ups.
