PS3 Multi Channel Sound Output

I am very interested to buy a PS3 for playing Blue Ray Discs and upscaling to 1080p DVD discs, but i have read in it's manual that multi channel audio is only available trhough it's HDMI output ony and that it's optical output only gives stereo 2 channel! Is this true??? My Yamaha DSP-AX1 does not have an HDMI input so i will have a serious problem if the optical output only gives stereo sound! Please let me know if this is true! Thanks!! 
You can get the old DTS and Dolby Digital formats through the optical, but not the new HD sound formats. I found the PS3's output through optical was really impressive, when coupled with HD video.
