Andrew Everard:

No, the point wasn't that at all: it was that the post to which I responded was accusing an individual of lying, which is unacceptable on these forums.

By the way, the Qute has both preamp outputs and a digital output, and is rather more than an 'upmarket streaming mini-system'

Sorry if you misconstrued my post - I wasn't referring to the bit about a previous poster, but the reference to the Naim Qute! The joys of quoting on the internet....

My point, anyway, was that Naim could easily produce a tuner/streamer/DAC for under £1k if they stripped out the amp - the Qute as it stands doesn't have a line level out, unlike the MF Clic. The Rotel equivalents don't seem to have appeared and your review didn't really care for the Marantz version, leaving the MF sort of in a field of one.

I rest my case.

Unless someone is now going to explain that line level can be variable as well as fixed.

Variable.

From Wikipedia:-

 Line out

The signal out of line out remains at a constant level, regardless of the current setting of the volume control. You can connect recording equipment to line out and record the signal, without having to listen to it through the device's speaker, and without the loudness of the recording changing if you change the volume control setting of the device while you are recording.

The impedance is around 100 O, the voltage can reach 2 volts peak-to-peak with levels referenced to -10 dBV (300 mV) at 10 kO, and frequency response of most modern equipment is advertised as 20 Hz - 20 000 Hz (although other factors influence frequency response).[citation needed] This impedance level is much higher than the usual 4 - 8 O of a speaker or 32 O of headphones, such that a speaker connected to line out essentially short circuits the op-amp. Even if the impedances would match, yielding the theoretical maximum power transfer of 50%, the power supplied through line out is not enough to drive a speaker.

Yes yes OK. But why have a line level out when it's got an amp in it, I say. And just because WHF 'didn't care for' the Marantz (though I'd dispute that assessment), doesn't make it a field of one really does it? What if WHF care for the MF even less? Does that leave Marantz in a field of one?

Oh, Wikipedia...

But FWIW, I'm currently using one of the UnitiProducts into a Supernait, with the latter controlling the volume.

Dear John and Andrew

I feel an air of hostility creeping in... for you, it's business, for me it's products I can take or leave as a consumer - so I'm going to look for what I want and reject what I don't (seems sensible).  Also, you gentlemen have the wherewithal to try out all this stuff, and we the consumers deserve some consideration for not having this advantage and having to read between the lines of reviews...

Nice to know Andrew is happy with the Qute into a Supernait but, as with so much of Naim, it seems a waste of functionality (the amp in this case). A line-level source-only Qute at £800 odd would do pretty well, I reckon, for those of us who perhaps would like a very good but necessarily state-of-the-art sound from these sources.

No hostility in the least on our part.

Not quite, since I'm responsible for the technology team running the website and don't really have anything to do with the magazine other than having a deep and long-standing passion for the stuff they write about. Although I'll admit to occasionally, well, skipping round the office clapping my hands in excitement when I get to try some of this stuff out as well Big Smile. So I'm really more on your side as a consumer when it comes to - in particular - network streamers than it being 'business'.

No, I'm sorry if that came across.

My challenging of your statement is more to do with the fact that I can think of Rotel, Marantz, Yamaha, Linn and Cambridge streamers that either exist or will be in the shops soon (so are no more vapourware than the MF).

I'm more interested in the fact the original poster hasn't been back since, but yes, last time I spoke to AM he was talking sometime in May for a review sample.

RE: Hi-Fi

I think we will be more likely to see this as a June/July release to be honest, they have just released their transport the M1 CDT so at least M1 series owners having something to play with in the interim.

Hi CustomCable,

Where can I find the specs for M1 CDT? Is it already in the market?

RE: Hi-Fi

If you just type "musical fidelity m1 cdt transport" in google it should throw a few pages up. The first units are due last week April, hopefully to customers before the royal holiday.
