Hello there.

My Mezzo 6 mid range cones have been dented. Both of them. I can now afford to replace them.

My first question is would there be any sonic distortions or performance issues because they are dented.

My second question is do you think its worth replaceing them, i am listening to them right now and are giving a fairly good presentation.

Thanks Beer

Why not contact Mordaunt-Short and ask them how much a new pair of cones is?

Then, if you're a dab hand with a soldering iron, it should be relatively easy to replace them yourself.  Otherwise a nerdy bloke in a shed near your could probably do it in under an hour.

On the other hand, if the sound is okay to your ears, put the grills back on and don't worry about it.

Thanks for replying, I'm not

Thanks for replying, I'm not good with a soldering iron and to my ears they they sound fine.
Do you know any reputable shops that would do replacement in Brighton area. For example Richer Sounds.

I have read some posts on magnet damage. Do you think that is possible. How much effect do cones make to sound quality.

thanks again.

Sorry,

Don't think I've even ever been to Brighton.

Any TV repair shop should be able to do the work for you, though, so have a leaf through the yellow pages.

Magnet damage seems unlikely unless you'd smashed the cabinets in first.  If you replace the offending drivers they'll come complete with magnets, coils and cones as pre-assembled units, however.

As for cone damage, if you can't hear it, it's probably not worth worrying about, but a hole or tear, rather than a dent, will probably get worse over time.

Speak to MS. Their email support is sound. Send them a pic? Not far to go to factory if necessary. Will the cones 'suck out'?

Lol it's the cones which make the sound. I take it they didn't show you this stuff in your high school's science class? We disassembled a loudspeaker: magnet, voice-coil, cone, the lot, then we built our own! It sounded rubbish. But hey it worked!

I suspect by 'cones' the op means the ciecular/conical cenrral covers qhich play little part in sound but are more aethetics/dust covers. I think it possible to tease out dents with a straw ousing suction or a pin. A little nail barnish etc to seal. I shudder to think how dents can arise. I have owned dozens of speakers in my murky past but never damaged a single one. Always sold in pristine condition. Yes, children have been around constantly and even a wild party or three. beauty, eh
