Isn't the Rega Brio R a bright amp?
I wouldn't say the Brio R is a bright amp, I don't find it so anyway!
Its the typical Rega sound........Musical!
Icon Audio ST40 III / KT88, Rega Apollo R, DAC, RS3
Rega RP6, Nagaoka MP-200, White Belt, Michell Tecnoweight, Rega Fono MM
Rega Quattro, Couple 1 & 2
Another 2 Speakers on my list to listening; the Dynaudio Focus 160 and Harbeth
Which Harbeth model do you have in mind? The SHL5 imo can handle all genres pretty well.
Accuphase E350 amp, Electrocompaniet EMC1UP CDP, Siltech 25th Classic anniversary 330I XLR Harbeth Super HL5 on Sound Anchor Quod ELS63 stands, Chord Odessey2 speaker cable. Grado SR60 headphones.
I recently attended a KEF showcase event, a fair number of their speakers were demoed with Marantz components, KI-pearl lite and PM6004 with pretty good results. Given that others have recommended the Arcam A19, I have a feeling that the R series speakers do well with amplifiers that veer towards the side of warmth. I have a hybrid tube amp driving my R300s and am quite happy with the results.
Sonos ZP90 <Monster M850 DCX> Audiolab 8200CD <Luxman JPC 150 XLR> Bada Purer 3.8 MK -- KEF R300
Oppo BDP-93 -- Marantz NR1603 + Audiolab 8000A -- Mordaunt-Short MS25i + Jamo A10 Series
I'm using 2 Cyrus X-Powers in Mono with a Cyrus Pre DAC QX with the R300's and it sounds fantastic. I guess my set is not high end but is fairly good and honestly I cant imagine music could sound any better.
I have also had them set up with my Arcam AVR 400 which sounded good , for a AV amp.
Hi Fi - Cyrus Stream XP, Cyrus Pre DAC QX, 2 Cyrus X Power in mono with PSX-r
AV - Arcam AVR 400 ARCAM BDP 300, Apple TV , Rel T2
Speakers - Kef R300, Kef R100, KEF R200c
Wires - Chord Signature digital interconects, Chord Signature Speaker Cable, Chord Signature Tuned Aray Analouge interconects, Russ Anderws Power Max Plus Mains Leads
Home Office- Cyrus Streamline , Chord Signature Speaker Cable, PMC Twenty21
The Brio R is certainly not bright, and is a very nice combination with the KEF R300/500. My initial thought would be that the Brio does not have enough power to drive the R500, but my dealer convinced me otherwise. Since then the R500 are on my wishlist.... as is a lot of other 'stuff'
Synology NAS > Squeezebox Touch > Rega DAC | Rega RP3 > Rega Brio R > Chord Odyssey 2 > Mission 752
Nothing new to add here really but I run my R100s with an Arcam A28 and recently heard them at home with an A19 and both are great combos, with the A19 being slightly more exciting. The 300s and 500s are both fairly easy to drive so I would def have a listen to the combo
Synology 212j, Sonos Connect, Leema Elements Dac, Pro-Ject Debut, Arcam A38, Kef R100, Chord cables
Marantz PM Pearl Lite for the KEF R500?
I've not heard the Marantz amp unfortunately. Are you able to demo the Kefs with the Marantz and an Arcam or two at the same time?
Out of interest, what amp did you originally hear the Kefs with?
I have the pearl lite together with the R500, must say i'm very happy with the combo. The sound is a bit warm, but i like it that way. I usually listen to music all day long and it never gets irritating or harsh to the ears. If i do want a little more presence in the higher frequenties i adjust the tri-tone controls. And off course my girlfriend thinks the speakers are pretty - definately +1 for the kefs.
During the audition i compared the pearl lite with the arcam A18 and they sound almost similar, i bought the pearl lite because it sounded more detailed, with more separation and more punch than the A18.
I found the Pearl lite to be pretty good but then I did not find a lot of difference with amps in this price range. I also tried Audiolab 8200, MF M3i, RK K2, Arcam A19, Creek 50A and Rega Brio R. I would not say any were harsh/bright. I think a lot depends on room size and volumes you play, if low volume I think any of those would do, for higher volume I would avoid the Rega as I found that struggled when pushed. For louder music/large room I would consider the MF M3i or RK K2. For low/moderate volumes I would try the Creek 50A that was probably the best of the 50W amps I tried. The Audiolab/Pearl Lite are good mid power amps. What amps does your dealer stock.
isn't the sound of a Dynaudio 160 or 260 much, much better than from the Kef R500/r700, even with (bad) records (metal and rock)?
