Having been born after the golden age of jazz banging head against wall I thought that it would be nice to start a thread about female jazz vocalist recommendations. I would love it if you could also make very specific recommendations like the particular artist's best song or album too.

My current favourites are Diana Krall's Live in Paris album, I love her rendition of Fly Me To The Moon, Almost Blue and Danny Boy.

Another favourite would be Norah Jones, Come Away With Me album, favourite song would be What am I to You, Carnival, Wake Me Up.

Renee Olstead's Skylark album is a great listen too, great songs include Stars Fell in Alabama, When I Fall in Love, Lover Man.

Will look forward to your recommendations,

Shafin

Just finish spinning Ella Fitz live in Berlin.

For a more current one, I too love Diana Krall especially the S' Wonderful album.

I too used to and to some extend, still like modern female jazz singers but I have found a lack of innovation and willingness to push the limits, at least by the better known names/labels, limiting. My tastes have since broadened and I have to say that very much to the dismay of my gf (and friends) I now almost exclusively listen to more avant-garde and free jazz than the more traditional styles. Spotify helped no limits I may add.

regards

I’m not a particular jazz aficionado, and certainly not of the “traditional” kind (I’ve got some Peggy Lee lying around somewhere and I did try Hoagy Carmichael some decades ago).

What goes by the term “modern jazz ” I can quite get along with as I find it very interchangeable with blues, and I particularly love listening to the lady in my avatar. Apart from - obviously – I totally love her voice, her albums are probably the most beautifully recorded that I own. Each to their own, of course, but there are people who can get a bit “sniffy” about her and I’ve never really understood why.

I'm no Jazz expert, but I like a bit of Julie London and, Astrud Gilberto, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee and Spanky Wilson.

I think my dad would say Ella Fitzgerald is the best of them all though.

RE: Female Jazz Vocalists

No mention so far of Billy Holiday or Annie Ross . I don't really listen to female jazz vocalists but those two sprang to mind when trying to think of some .

Does also  DinahWashington qualify ? Worth checking out even if she doesn't .
