Dynaudio Xeo 3's - Will I still need a DAC?

I'm seriously considering these to replace my current system but wanted to know whether I still need a DAC to go between the wireless transmitter and my Apple TV2?

Common sense to me says that I will still need a DAC but just wanted confirmation!

The Xeo transmitter has RCA and an optical IN whereas the ATV2 has only the optical out (bar HDMI for the TV etc...)

If so any recommendations for a DAC under £150

No DAC required.*

Plug the ATV2 into the back of the Xeo transmiiter with an optical digital cable.

Plug the ATV2 into your wireless modem/router with ethernet.

*From the Xeo website...

"With the Xeo Transmitter you don’t need D/A converters, soundcards, preamplifiers and speaker cables"

The Dyaudio Xeo 3 would be in my top 3 upgrades (from what I have now) if it weren't for the fact that making the Xeo AirPlay compatible means 'hogging' the only optical digital input the Xeo transmitter has, with an ATV2. (I'd have nowhere left to plug in an optical digital connector for my TV/Blu-ray/Humax sounds Sad )

That's no issue for me... Only need that one optical for the ATV. All music and radio (Internet) taken care of Laughing out loud

TV goes through the Sony surround sound system etc...

All done Smile

You could use the analogue input from an airport express. Means using the dac in the airport, but it would work.

It does seen a wasted opportunity only giving one digital input tho.

They won't (regrettably) get my £1250 unless (a) they make a version of the transmitter that has AirPlay built in. Or ... (b) has one extra optical digital input for me to add Airplay myself (with an ATV2) and be able to continue having my telly/BD/Humax connected as well.

This is partly why I am looking towards the £699 B&W A7 at the moment. AirPlay is built-in and it has ethernet, USB, analogue mini-jack and optical digital inputs.

the A7 looks a superb piece of kit but alas no use to me as I haven't got a space to put it whereas already got stands in situ for speakers!

Try THIS or something similar.

Thanks, but the Xeos would already need an ATV2 (with cables and mains connection).

Yet another box - even a little one - with another wall wart (and DC cable) sort of erodes the appeal of 'wireless' speakers.

The B&W A7 would only need 1 mains cable, one ethernet and one optical. (Three wires, one box, no stands.)

Xeos (+ transmitter + ATV2 + Lindy box) would require 5 mains outlets, two optical cables and one ethernet cable. (Eight wires, five boxes + stands.)

But your reason against the XEO 3s, was a lack of optical connections, not a cable or box count issue.

Also the B&W A7 could never be considered a comparable product to the XEOs in any sense other than that they play music.

Regardless of cable counts, the wireless transmitter of the XEOs could be anywhare out of sight, including under the sofa, if neccessary, so none of the wiring need be visible. That's the beauty of wireless devices. You don't need to sit looking at your router and power cables when using the internet do you?

Lol.  I reckon they'd be ideal for chebby, esp. given how much of his listening is spoken word.
