RE: Devastating lyrcs

I like a few one liners.

James Brown - "I don't know Karate, but I know K-razy"

Happy Mondays - "Son, I'm thirty, I only went with your mother 'cos she's dirty"

Specials - "Wish I had lipstick on my shirt, instead of p*ss stains on my shoes"

'Down By The Sea' by Strawbs (music and lyrics by the great Dave Cousins).  All DC's lyrics are beautifully written but this song is one of the highlights, particularly this section (which is really 'devastating' when you hear it tied to the music):

Last night I lay in bed

And held myself

Trying to remember

How it once was with you

How your hands were softer.

Yesterday I found myself

Staring into space

Rather like the sailor

In my own home surroundings

I'm not sure I know me.

If you were me what would you do

Don't tell me I don't need you to

It won't help me now.

My Strawbs highlight...

The King's men took communion-
As the first rays of the sun-
Lit up the castle's gloomy walls-
The fatal day begun-
From the castle green the rooks took flight-
To the high trees in the east-
To their carrion minds the battlefield-
Set a table for a feast.

RE: Devastating lyrics

Probably my favourite lyrics, come from the Moody Blues (Days Of Future Passed)...

Breathe deep the gathering gloom,

Watch lights fade from every room.

Bedsitter people look back and lament,

Another day's useless energy spent.

Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,

Lonely man cries for love and has none.

New mother picks up and suckles her son,

Senior citizens wish they were young.

Cold hearted orb that rules the night,

Removes the colours from our sight.

Red is grey and yellow white.

But we decide which is right,

And which is an illusion?

I Want You by Elvis Costello is one of the most disturbing songs I can think of: the lyrics are like a stalker's manifesto... But it's not just the lyrics, but also his vocals, plus the way the music builds in an increasingly distorted, dynamic way, before ending in quiet menace. Genius.

What do you make of "Alison"? Don't fully understand it myself I mean, especially this bit "Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking

when I hear the silly things that you say.
I think somebody better put out the big light,
cause I can't stand to see you this way."

'Alison, my aim is true' is about a lady of the night, allegedly. I read some years ago, although no-one knows if it's based on personal experience or Declan's vivid imagination.

"Oh it's so funny to be seeing ya after so long, girl..." Then it continues: " But I heard you let that little friend of mine
 take off your party dress.

"Cause I don't know if you are loving somebody, I only know it isn't mine"

Dunno about devastating lyrics, but the whole of 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' (Genesis) is absolutely barking mad! :bounce:

"The God i believe in isn't short of cash mister" Always works when the Jehovahs or mormons come around. Tricky lyric. Free pint for the first person who guesses it without resorting to the internet.

Reminds me of a sign I saw on a doorbell in Malta a few years ago '~To the Jehova Witnesses - We are Catholic'

In 1971 The Hollies produced the closest they've come to a concept album 'Distant Light'. One track called 'Promised Land' is about Nuclear conflict.

"Got to change it now, Lord only knows how, till there ain't no more."  Then it goes on: " Where have all the rainbows gone?... my old pa says he's seen better days..."

Pretty deep and thought-provoking.

Indeed, as are some lines from King Crimson's 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' album, from 'Epitaph' (another in the same vein - Nuclear war)

The walls on which the prophet wrote,

Is cracking, at the seams.

Upon the instruments of death,

The sunlight, brightly gleams.

Where every man, is torn apart,

With nightmares and with dreams.

Will no-one lay the laurel wreath,

As silence, drowns the screams.

(chorus)

Between the iron gates of fate,

The seeds of time were sown,

And watered by the deeds of those,

Who know and who are known;

Knowledge is a deadly friend,

When no one sets the rules.

The fate of all mankind I see,

Is in the hands of fools.

Oh, and the music aint bad either Smile
