"Cambridge Audio AZUR 351C" or "Marantz CD 6004"?
English

Best experts!
This is my first post so: "Hi all!"

I am building my first Hi-Fi system (entry level - lowish budget), and I want your opinion about it:

- ROTEL RA-10 (already bought)
- Tannoy Revolution DC6T SE

As for the CD player, I am struggling with the alternatives:

- Cambridge Audio AZUR 351C
- Marantz CD6004

Opinions welcome!

Hi,

Firstly, I wouldn't call the kit entry level - as its not - especially the speakers.

I own the Marantz CD6004 and it sounds really nice. I bought it mostly for its good headphone output though. I also own an older CA cd player which is lively and fun- I would probably go for the CA 351 CD player to pair with the amp and speakers you mention. I wouldn't discound other cd players such as the Denon 720AE. Is it possible to demo? I can't understand why Rotel don't have a CD player to pair with the RA-10, at a similar price.

HiFi - Cambridge Audio 340C, Pioneer A30, Denon TU 260L, Dali Lektor 2.

I called it entry level as it is my first setup and I am by no means "expert", and to safeguard myself from the always possible 2000£+ suggestions Smile

I have no way to demo, so I'll take your suggestion and probably stick to the CA 351C that was my first choice Smile

And I agree on the fact that Rotel should make a CD to par with the RA-10, specially considering that the boom review of the RA-10!

Not heard the marantz, but the 351C sounded excellent, and had a real tussle choosing between it and the higher end 651C. Guy in the shop suggested marantz sounded bright/possibly harsh in comparrison. 351c sounded warm but very detailed, and plenty of attack.

CA 651C , Rega brio-r , Dynaudio dm2/7 , Denon TU 260l , Google nexus 7 , Harman Kardon BTA10

Im just buying a CA 651 which is a Blu-Ray player a bit more money at £299 meant to be better sound wise than the CA 351C and it plays DVDs and SACDs as well.

The CA651 is similar to the Oppo 93.

Yeah, even though what is in the review of the 351C is pretty convincing: if you only read CDs, then the tray/motor/lens assembly will be optimized better, instead of having to adapt to different speeds and different media... at least it sounds convincing :)

As for the Rotels, the reviews are pretty lowish, I know they are not all in life, but since I am a newbie and I have no way to demo, I rely on reviews quite a bit Biggrin

I would not take everything in reviews as gospel. I know someone who had a CA351, did not like it and took it back and kept his Oppo93 instead which he found better but its a matter of taste to certain extent.

Why can't you demo them?

Hi

Don't read the review as bible !

I read the poor review of the Roel RCD 1520 on WHF and nevertheless I took it to my home for the weekend from my dealer  for demo.

I was amaze how a great CD it is and bought it immedietly . On the contrary I bought the Mission MX5 speakers without a demo based

on the excellent review by WHF and it was a huge mistake I replaced them for the Proac 140 after a year .

Rotel CDPs are excellent : neutral , detailed and punchy and are very reliable, with your Rotel amp it will be an excellent match .

Stick with the CA. My dad has one and considering the price, it sounds great with bags if detail. It also responds well to interconnect upgrades.

Not sure that CA 351 or Matantz 6004 is a good match with the ROTEL RA-10 amp .CA products tend to be too bright and Marantz 6004

is too "colorful" , try to demo Rotel RCD-12 or 06SE with your set up you will find out that this match will be more coherent .

Thank you all for the precious suggestions, I will consider trying to demo the various CD players, even though it will be hard as I don't live in town and italian salespeople are not really willig to lend you stuff to try at home Smile
