This is a question, preferably for the what hi-fi team, regarding the review for the CA651c cd player.

In the review WHF stated the 651 struggles with Dianna Krauls cd, and say the 6004 sounds better here. They also say the CA351c is agile and dynamic, and you compare it to the cd6004. Is the 351c therefore better than the 651c in agility terms, and playing subtleties?  I auditioned both (extensively-annoyingly so probably to the staff) and was really struggling to deceide which i preferred. I have dynaudio speakers and a Brio R amp.

Or is the 651c better than the 351c in every aspect, but only loses out on a star in the review because of it's higher price bracket?

If you auditioned them both and still cannot decide, go for the cheapest. I'm still happy with my CA 340C and my Marantz 6004. The CA is definitely brighter. Sorry I haven't heard the CA 351C. WOuld you get my benefit from changing your amp?

yes, I am about to upgrade to a rega brio r, hence why i'm really struggling to make the right decision. I wish what hifi would get back to me!   Crying

The 351 and the 651 were both much warmer than my previous 640, which is good. I'm just concerned what they are saying regarding it's timing abilities.

take the WHF reviews with a pinch of salt - they are just a guide

go and listen for yourself then decide and tbh the heart of the system is your amp and the Brio & Dyns will go great together!

RE: Cambridge Audio 651c vs 351c

I've read through all three reviews (Marantz too), and I suspect there isn't much to choose between the two CA models, but because one was half as expensive again it got 4 not 5 stars.  Remember the stars are relative (to price) not absolute.

If I was intent on getting a Cambridge I think I'd either take the 351c and put the balance towards music, or if the 651c is heavily discounted, get that one.  Can you stretch to the Rega at c £500?  And do you definitely prefer the CAs to the Marantz?

If still undecided, wait until you have your Brio at home then borrow the CDPs to try.  Another offer is usually just around the corner!

Ended up buying the 651c. Hugely impressed with it (after going through 2 which were faulty). the sound is amzing....so detailed, and the bass weight added to my music is something i have been missing for my entire time in hifi. Way bigger bass than my old 640cv2. This is the sound i have been after for so long. AWESOME machine. I got large discount, and almost certainly couldnt have afforded the asking rrp though.
