Hi all!

After having read numerous threads on Whathifi over the last few weeks, I decided to post my own burning question here...

By means of introduction to the forum, I'm Alexander from the Netherlands and a big music/hifi enthusiast....

I recently purchased a pair of B&W CM10's and an arcam irdac (mostly playing FLAC). However I can't seem to wrap my head around what amp would best suit the CM10?

I initially set my budget to $1000... Would it be reallly neccesairy to set a higher budget (+1500) to driver the CM's properly?

Advice on what amp you think suits the CM10 best is highly appreciated!

I narrowed down the list to:

*NAD C356BEE

*Naim Nait 5si

*Arcam FMJ A19

*Rotel RA-1520

Would going up in price (for example: Naim Nait XS, Roksian Caspian M2) really be neccesairy?

One thing that would be of great added value to me (however no absolute requirement) is if the amp has a good integrated phono stage.

Thanks a lot for you advice!  excellent!

Amazing you got a cm10. Great. See i would strictly recomend you not to buy anything below 70 watts minimum,i really mean bare minimum. Fancy a roksan candy.85 w. I have recently bought a 683 and used it with arcam. It was good sound but as i cranked up the volume amp distorted now there is something wrong with my speaker or amp... As we both share a similar contruction and cm10 is more powerful by one extra bass driver... The impedance of my speakers drops to 3 ohms and i am sure the number would be atleast same for CM10.

i would really recomend you to take it seriously. As i have spent more than 2000pounds for mysetup including local taxes and now struggling with sound. Read my blog asking for help and read what most ppl have suggested.

Even if you have to wait do that go for some thing powerful Caspian would be awesome. Arcam A 19 normally is not comfortable below 6 ohms clearly stated by Stereophile magazine.Rotel 1520 is a bare minimum. Pre power would be awesome... Use Rotel brand as first preference as they have same B&W Family. Feel free to check. Spend that extra buck the way it holds the drivers by the scruff of their neck and fully justify your 3000 dollars... BEST

Thank you both for your response, I mean I would be happy to up my budget to 1500 pounds if that will make a audible difference in quality. I won't be driving the speakers very loud, just moderate volume levels... Does it than matter to go above 100W amps? Any other suggestions for amps and explanation are very welcome!

See the way i have learnt it is. It secondary to consider how loud will you be playing. More importantly the way a system plays at low and moderate volume. The way the amp is taking on drivers at all levels. Read the 800 d reveiw. I know they are far more powerful but see the way amp and their power effect.

having said that yours is also a generesoly powerful speakers with 4 drivers and a tweeter all above 6 inch and three of them are bass drivers.

caspian is an award winner and i am sure can justify CM10 85 watts and multi award winner. Also as said above 1570 is a good contender 120 watts same family. I would say drop the idea of 1520.

if not going for a pre power set up which i don't thing funds will allow go between these two.

Roksan Caspian vs Rotel 1570 for CM10. Read reveiws ,do inquiries such as local service, warranty period. Deal you get and yes if an audition is possible make your personal choice.

Hi Alexander

Naim's Nait XS 2 and or the NAD C365BEE.

Alternatively if you're also willing to consider used/discontinued amplification then an ATC SIA2-150 MK1, Krell KAV-400xi and Rotel's RA-1062 (the finest and most balanced sounding amplifier i feel Rotel have produced since 2003) are also worth consideration.

Btw, some of these amplifiers don't have a phono stage built in so a phono stage such as Rega's Fono is worth bearing in mind.

All the best

Definitely a Rotel 1570 or similar... Naim and B&W don't go well in my opinion...

Hi Alexander!

IMO you've made a good to start with setting a budget and asking for advice. The very best advice I can offer is that you listen for yourself.

The 4 amps you've listed have a different presentation- the question is...what do you like best?

(Usually rotel are recommended for B&W, AFAIK they are the amplifier B&W uses to develop their speakers. That would be a fine place to start.)

After you've picked your favourite you could always demo a more expensive amp against that one to hear if it's got something extra that's worth paying for.

Have fun!

I would suggest you check out Electrocompaniet and Hegel amps as well, there's a beautiful synergy between B&W speakers and these two amp brands.

There are products in the portfolios of both brands that do fit his budget envelope. Especially if he's not buying from UK (he did quote his budget in US Dollars and not British Pounds). Smile

OK thanks just thought they started around £2,000. What are the US prices?
