Best Budget Loudspeakers???

My 15yr + old floorstanders just packed it in the other day and im looking for some replacements. They may have lacked some clarity at the Hi end and midrange but they produced brilliant low end bass and went LOUD!
Whereas as volume and bass are the not the be all and end all for me, they certainly are quite important as my music preference is more towards more rock and dance music.

Looking at my options for around £250, i could get some Dali Lektor 1's or similiar bookshelf speakers. But my concern is that these speakers while being 'clear' won't satisfy my volume/bass/low end bass demands. I think I'd rather sacrifice a little bit of quality (though not too much) and get some larger speakers.

Will this be possible on my budget? If not how much would i have to spend? Is there perhaps a compromise between bookshelf speakers and floorstanding loudspeakers?

I bought the latest edition of the magazine for some help on the subject but all the reviews of kit >£1000's seem to be for bookshelf speakers. Please could someone help!!

I currently running a cambridge 340a amp. if that helps.
Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. They seem ok but at £80 are well under budget. I've got around £200 to spend and surely a more expensive set would be far superior.

They might be small, they might not look up to much, but there are loads on ebay within your budget and they can do serious bass....I nominate the Bose Acoustimass cube speakers.........as a left field suggestion, but they do work very well...............

Q Acoustics 1050i - superb speakers, but maybe out of your price range if you are really stuck at £200. £360 but often available for less than £300. One place in Ayr has them for £280.

Super low end, very dynamic, I think they'd be what you might be looking for if you like a big old analogue sound with plenty of bottom on them. Asso speaker of the year in another UK Hi Fi magazine.

Another vote for the Mordaunt-Short 914i here. Far better than a budget floorstander has any right to be.

Rega RP3/Elys 2 - Graham Slee Gram Amp 1 - Rotel RCD965BX - Exposure 1010 amp - Dynaudio DM2/6 - Chord Co. Chameleon VEE3/Rumour 2 - Musical Fidelity V90-HPA - Sennheiser HD595

Re: Best Budget Loudspeakers???

The Dali 1's you mentioned go loud and low yeah...there great actually....should certinaly be on your list to go and have a listen to...........

I just bought a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 9.2......which are the bigger brother of the 9.1 that get alot of good press. For the money I reckon you will have to go a long way to better the Diamond 9.2's....and I'm not being blinded by the fact I bought a pair...I auditioned so many speakers before buying them - think I may have anoid the SevenOaks Hi Fi bloke a bit actually.....

I had the same criteria as you pretty much...clear mids, clear highs....but with some good deep bass. The bass on the 9.2's goes low with power, but isn't sloppy....it also doesn't suffer the boom boxyness of others in it price bracket. Anyway...........

Worth an audition...

78finn have you compared the 9.2 with the 9.1? If so,are they very different from each other?

I would go along with the AE neo3 for £200 too, they should retail at about £350. If they sound similar to the evo3 they will blow away all those budget £150 boxes away with ease.  The bass goes down to 40hz at least so that should satisfy your liking of deep punchy bass too

Indiana line speakers are very good for their money.

They are popular in Italy but i think they can be hard to find in the UK.

Very fine speakers for the money!

Try to listen to Heco speakers to.

They suprised me in a very good way compared to expensive stuff!!

A live recording does really sounded live with these!

I gave this advise to a few others who asks for budget speakers but refused to try them or neglected the advice as the speakers aren't familiar in the English press i suppose.

But you should be suprised if you listen to them.
