ATC SCM19's
English

My ATC SCM19's arrived today Big Smile

Big brutes that simply eclipse my DB1i's in every way. They make the DB1i's feel like toys. Even though they need running in they already sound in a different league to the little PMC's.

Ive also got my Rel Strata 5 switched off while i run the ATC's in as there is no point setting the sub up now while i get used to the ATC's and give their sound time to settle in.

The SCM19's have more bass weight than the DB1i's and the Rel put together but bearing in mind i had the Rel set up to blend with the Tiny PMC's so when its set to blend in with the ATC's im expecting Attomic Power.

Also, to answer the question i asked along with everybody else looking at ATC speakers regarding their sensitivity, My DB1i's are 87db compared to the SCM19's 85db. And the volume level im getting for any particular setting is the same or possibly louder on the ATC's. Im using a Krell Kav300i which is 150w/ch@8ohm and cant wait to run the speakers in and turn it up.

One thing that i noticed about the new sound straight away is the general sense of ease about their presentation like its a walk in the park for them to play music, I always felt the DB1i was forcing out sound in a way.

I can safely say im now converted to ATC Smile

Hi MattSPL

Congratulations on your SCM19's. I hope you will enjoy their performance for many years to come.  Smile

Btw, i am shocked (NOT Wink) that you too have noticed that the ATC's can sound as loud if not louder than a higher sensitivity speaker. The ATC's have excellent dynamics and you'll probably find after you have acclimatised to them (as many other clients of mine have) that they'll also sound perfectly fine at low/moderate levels.

The ATC drive units are very constant thereby allowing the amplifier to deliver it's full power all the time (prior to clipping). The fact is the impedence of the speaker is far more important than the overall efficiency.

For me ATC inspires confidence.

All the best

Thanks for all the reply's.

Yes im delighted with them. Ive been listening all night and they are definitly louder than the PMC's at the low/moderate volume ive been playing them at and sound way better than the PMC's already.

They actually sound really ballsy like the PMC IB1's i used to have. Really looking forward to them loosening up.

Re: ATC SCM19's

The lower impedance of the PMC's may be cancelling out their gain in sensitivity (thereabouts). Also, the SCM19's larger bass driver will shift more air, exciting the room easier, giving the impression of loudness.

It is surprising the effect a bit of extra cabinet volume has on the scale of a loudspeaker. My sub is essentially the same amp and driver as before, but a bigger cabinet volume, and the difference between the two were pretty amazing. Add to that the fact the SCM19's uses SL driver technology which is used in their more expensive designs, and you end up with a speaker that's worth every penny over the fantastic SCM11.

hmm, not sure about that.  i don't know the impedance of the pmcs, but most amp increase power as impedance drops (within reason), so his krell should have been pushing more watts up the pmcs at the same volume level.

Hi guys, what stands are you using with the 19s ?

I`m  wondering what is better, Atacama HMS2 or Partington Dreadnought

Re: ATC SCM19's

The DB1i is an 8ohm speaker but dips to 6ohm's so i believe.

But the extra cabinet vilume of the 19's and bigger driver must have a lot to do with it. The packing box for the pair of DB1i's is smaller than 1 of the 19's boxes.

The 19's really are quite large speakers. I think only for the fact i had PMC IB1's when i started going out with my girlfriend, have i gotten away with these ATC's.

How are you finding the Amp Craig with your speakers?

Im using Sound Organisation stands i bought from Pete's in Dublin. They are nice gloss black, 60cm tall and made of 4 weighty metal square sections clamped together by the top and bottom plates. My problem is the Laminate wooden flooring thats flexing near the corner making it difficult to steady the left speaker rock solid. Ive got 2mm Rubber mat under the stands to stop them interacting with the floor.

Id love to put a concrete slab under them but i have one under my sub and my girlfriend doesn't like that one as it is.

It was just a guess. A 4 ohm speaker draws more power from the amplifier, so it's then down to the amplifier as to whether it can provide that extra power cleanly and stay stable. The PMC's in question are 6 ohms. If that's having no affect on the overall volume level, then the SCM19's can't sound louder than the PMC's.

Hi Evlampi

Of all the SCM19's that i have sold over the years with stands it has been the Soundstyle XS122. They are simple, effective and great VFM.

Partington has been the most popular stands with ATC for our customers, as the HMS2 is a more recently introduced stand. The HMS2's do have a bigger than normal top plate, and suit larger speakers like the SCm19's, Monitor Audio RX2's and MK S150's perfectly.
