Hi Ive currently got a denon 2910 receiver and monitor audio radius speakers (270's,225 and 90 rears) im looking to upgrade my system to include a decent(ish) cd player which wil be run through my current denon receiver. Once funds allow i would like to introduce a stereo amp and also upgrade my speaker package to the monitor audio silver RX package with RX6 floor standers at the front.

I would like to know if there is a way to connect both amps to just the one set of speakers in order to keep all the equipment in one room in the same place. ive seen spliters for 2 sets of speakers but is there something the opposite for 2 amps?

also any ideas about the cd player and amp would be appreciated, im thinking of getting arcam cd17 and an a18 amp as i can get each of these for around £450 each through a friend. I know these may not be 5 star winners but given the discount over new they seem a good buy.

thanks

Using a Stereo Amp with an AV Amp - This is my generic answer.....

To do this your AV Amp must have pre-outs for the front left and right channels

1. Connect the front pre-outs on the AV Amp to a spare input (excluding phono) on the stereo amp. (Maybe Aux)
2. Ensure the left and right front speakers are connected to the stereo amp. (May seem obvious I know!) and leave all other speakers connected to the receiver.
3. Select the input on the Stereo Amp that the AV Amp is connected to.
4. Set the volume on the Stereo Amp to a memorable position. A lot of people recommend the 12 o'clock position.
5. Run the speaker calibration set up.

Now that this is set up you can enjoy the best of both worlds!

When you want to watch a movie you need to ensure both amps are on and the input the receiver is connected to is selected. Then set the volume back to the 12 o'clock position and enjoy! (Remember to return the volume on the Stereo Amp back to it's normal position before you switch inputs!!)

To listen in stereo you just need to use the Stereo Amp. (Ensure your stereo components such as a CD player are connected to the Stereo Amp and not the AV Amp). The AV amp is left off.

Hi thanks for that, one last question though, if i do that and i want to adjust the volume of something im watching via the receiver will i need to adjust the volume on the stereo amp? also being as the stereo amp will be driving the fronts will the centre channel sound matched to the left and right?

If you are using the receiver then the overall volume will be controlled by the receiver.

The centre will match the fronts as this is all sorted when you re-run the calibration.

Hi ,

Sorry to but in, and sound rather stupid in the process but how does the av amp control the volume of the fronts, i understood this to be done from the stereo amp.

Thanks

Messiah is correct.
The stereo amp acts like a power amp in the above situation so if you increase the volume on the AV amp it will increase the volume of all the speakers. If you have calibrated as Messiah states above then everything will be adjusted equally.

Looks like the Denon 2910 is a DVD player?

Many thanks.

I've now learnt that my av amp can control the volume on my front speakers when in 5.1 mode - don't quite understand how - but hey, if it works, it works!
