Yamaha A-S500 Integrated Amplifier
hello , i am going to buy a good amplifier for £300ish i think thats how much you can get these for. They got awar for best amp up to £500.. . Firstly anyone with any experience with them erm are they any good ? and ive got an iphone 4 and going to buy denon d5000 or akg k701 so how does the whole setup work :S . Do i connect my headphone to my iphone 4 to the amp :S ? please someone tell me how the setup works . Thanks
oh right i researched on them the headphone amps and came between graham slee novo or solo , i know solo's are better but is it worth that £100 extra ?
Or you use the dedicated Yamaha dock for the iPod, which connects to a multipin socket on the rear of the amplifier.
Sorry, never heard a Solo or Novo. It would be a judgement call on which would be better for the money.

The Novo is a perfectly good match for the Yamaha A-S500 amp and should offer a better sound with your headphones than the integrated headphones socket. Big benefit of the Graham Slee range is the upgradability - you can buy the Novo and improve it by adding the better PSU1 power supply for example. The Solo is better than the Novo but if you're keen to stick to a total £500, the Novo is a good enough match for the A-S500 and you could always upgrade later?

For thoughts and experiences on the amp, I would post the same question in the hifi section of the forum as it gets far more views.
As for connections, for iphone to amp use afficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=i-UJTY-DCY6WhQfT9qjeDw&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCsQrQQwAA"> LOD or line out dock cable which goes from the docking port on the iphone to RCA (phono) cables into one of the inputs into the amp (any will do except tape out and phono). That bypasses the iphones own amp ans will cost £5 to £25. You can also buy a digital docking port which bypasses both the iphones amp and DAC and then you connect it to a DAC and that to the amp, but it much more expensive. Then connect the headphones to the headphone jack on the amp.
But, are you planning on having speakers with your set up as well? If not and you are only going to listen to headphones, I would get a dedicated headphone amp.
Internet - laptop - DAC - amp - lots of headphones.
