Replacement foam for headphone ear-pads?

Hullo,

I've a much-loved pair of old Sennheisers whose ear-pads are a little worse for wear, and I'm looking to spruce them up. Unfortunately Sennheiser don'e make replacements for them anymore, and the ear-pads are an unusual shape, so there's no apparent off-the-shelf option. I think the simplest solution is to get a couple of small sheet of ear-pad foam, and fashion some make-do ear-pads myself. I'm not too worried about how they'll look – I only use them around the house.

Anyway, my problem is getting hold of the foam material. Nowhere I've looked sells the stuff. Any suggestions where I might be able to buy some?

I was just at this site looking at cables and saw they have loads of foam pads for headphones

You may be better adapting the pad that looks most like your existing one, than trying to start from scratch. I know a lot of head-fiers do switch pads between brands as they find some more comfortable than others.

Thanks for the advice, but wrapping a sheet of foam around the ear-pieces and tying it off will be more straightforward (and cheaper) than adapting some already-formed pads. As I said, the problem is sourcing the foam. Any ideas on this matter will be appreciated.

Would these Grado pads be big enough to fit over the Senns?

Available from HifiHeadphones online.

Re: Replacement foam for headphone ear-pads?

I had to replace the cushions and earpads for my Mk1 (c.1985) Sennheiser HD520s.  I got mine from Strachan Direct.  This was back in 2004 - not sure if the website is around any more, but they were the Internet sales part of Strachan Electronics, who I believe are still going.

One thing I did find out (from them) was that the MkI and MkII HD520s used the same pads.  What model are yours?

Mine are HD470s, with oval ear-pieces.They measure 60mm width by 90mm length, so it would be hard to fit round ear-pads. That's why I'm after just some foam sheets to fit them myself.

Hi seantest. I found this Sennheiser spares site. The HD470s are discontinued, but you could contact them to see if any other would fit so you could adapt them. At least then it would be the right foam.

Many thanks for your time and effort idc.

I'd tracked this site down before now and emailed them about the ear-pads. As you saw they were discontinued, but the folks there couldn't recommend me any others to try.

I do like these Sennheisers, but I do wish they weren't such an odd shape. Sad

Did you try calling Strachan (see above) - as they used to have lots of pads in stock?

Re: Replacement foam for headphone ear-pads?

Sorry, I meant to mention earlier - but there is a dutch website I found while looking for the best price for my HD520 earpads, that seem to stock all things Sennheiser, hang on:

Click - Prosl.com

Just looked and they list HD470 earpads at some extremely cheap price ?4.90 in VAT + shipping... - might be worth contacting them, if you haven't already.

Thanks for that, but their minimum order is ?50.Typical that it's the one place that not only stocks the ear pads but also at a very reasonable price.

Still think my best bet is to just get hold of some foam.

RE: Replacement foam for headphone ear-pads?

The Sennheiser replacement earpads are obsolete for these headphones however anyone wanting earpads can use the black sheep pads that fit  perfectly and you don't have to buy 50.
