Quick question, i'm new to headphones and want something to run directly from my iPad so thinking of a pair of AKG K450's

Am i right in thinking that home headphones, such as the Grado SR80i's need a dedicated headphone amp to drive them?

Not necessarily to drive them but a DAC/headphone amp will make a significant difference, in my opinion. Think Fiio E10 for 24 bit sound....... Smile

Grado's are probably one of the most forgiving headphones with regards to amping. They will sound fine (if you like the Grado colouration or no bass extension) straight from an iPad. If you buy some higher impedance headphones to use on a portable device then consider an external amplifier.
