need some headphones.
English

i'm after some headphones and have absolutely no idea where to start.  i'm after something with a smidge of warmth/richness and a bit of boogie, definitely not bright or over exuberant.  i'll probably mostly listen to 60's/70's rock, electronic and 'man with guitar' music.

budget around £300.  cheers[Y]

Re: need some headphones.

Consider Sennheiser HD600 for warmth. Some prefer this model over the HD650 and if you do (and possible upgrade to the 650 cable) you can get it for £200 or less delivered.

As with everything, listen and decide which make/sound you prefer.

I personally do not like the Grado sound but YMMV. Smile

Consider a headphone amp to get the best out of them too!

I know I seem to repeat this one, but every so often Play.com do the HD650's for £180. For that price it must surely be the best deal for under £200.

Re: need some headphones.

thanks, i'm leaning towards the senns as they generally get reviewed as a warm/smooth listen and i'm looking for something to relax with, just hope i don't find them dull.

Re: need some headphones.

my local dealer has dropped me off some sennheiser hd598 which i think are a replacement for the 595, and also some of the ugliest headphones i've ever seen called ergo model 2.  not had chance to listen yet, any ideas how long these might take to run-in?  do they even need to?

Re: need some headphones.

Can't find much on the 598's other than they come in beige!

They come in at about the £200 mark.

Noticed on play.com that the HD650's are now up to £299. But they do have the HD600's for £199. I remember somebody getting these in the sale earlier this year though for something daft like £99...There is a date pattern on when play reduce their prices. Not sure when then the next one is though.

I think if you're going to end up paying list price for your phones you should also consider the Grado's.

Re: need some headphones.

cheers pete, i think i will definitely check out the grados as well.

had a brief listen of the senns last night, definitely not overly bassy like the cheaper senns i've heard, not at all sure i like them though, but i'll give them a longer listen tonight.  and the beige and dark wood is a bit flash, reminds me of the interior of an old jag. Smile

Re: need some headphones.

well, the cybermen-esque ergo 2s are, to my ears, much better then the senns.  i left the senns playing over night to run them in, which seems to have improved the bass and damped some brightness down, but the ergo 2s are so much more musical and natural sounding.  the senns have more bass but are nowhere near as enjoyable to listen to, maybe they need a headphone amp to sound their best.

both though have nowhere near the bass impact of my speakers, is this usual with headphones?

i'm going to see if my dealer can get me some grados to try, but the ergos are in pole position at the moment, the only downside is the front of the frame rubs on the arms of my specs.
