Budget Headphones

I am looking to buy a pair of on-ear headphones to replace my Grado iGrado headphones linked below, they are really annoying and hurt my ears especially with prolonged use, the band that fixes on my ears always moves position and is so tight that after I take them off my head actually hurts, not also mentioning the poor sound and build quality as well as the cable that always gets tangled up, a very shoddy attempt Grado, they do not come close to my old pair of Sennheiser PX 100 in terms of sound and comfort, the Grados are too harsh and bright on the treble side and they are not as weighty and full sounding as the Sennheiser's.

Current Grado pair...

Old Sennheiser pair...

I am looking for a pair similar to the Sennheiser pair with premium sound and build quality and would ideally like some alternatives to the links below, I would also like to know when the new Audio Technica range will be released as I like the look of these pair also linked below.

Budget is around £50-80

RE: Budget Headphones

I've recently got a set of JVC HAS160 for out and about, well actually two.

I am still surprised that something so good only costs a tenner.

However, it is not an overtly 'warm' sounding h/phone nor has it premium build. - It should survive some heavy use though and looks good with some nice colours to choose from (got red and purple).

Clear, full and dynamic.

regards

RE: Budget Headphones

I have the ath ws55 and the px100 II ,if you like the px100's youll love the 55's they're very similar to the 100's but offer a more spacious and detailed sound and cleaner more extended bass plus no one can hear them. I dont think they are great for mobile use though they do stick out a bit, plus i find the cable to each earpeice annoying.Yesterday i took a punt on the AKG 450 @ £40 hmmm. so far unimpressed, muddled subdued treble, thick upper bass they definately need to be eq'd but i hate meddling with all that, but they are comfortable and look good on. I'm gonna leave them running for couple of days and report back.

What is the difference between the ATH-WS55 v. ATH-WS55i in terms of pure sound quality as I have read on the What Hi Fi review that the WS55i has better bass reproduction as well as the build in microphone for phone devices.

RE: Budget Headphones

I haven't heard the ath-ws55i but id be suprised if they sound much better, if at all.

They were released to attract iphone users hence the "i" ,i cant imaging they would have re-engineered the internals.

The ATH-WS77 look interesting, i have not heard these and i'm not about to.Im more than happy with the WS55 for home use.

Im typing whilst listening to the AKG K450 they don't come anywhere near close to the ATH- WS55 but they'll be fine for holiday, plane noise etc, i'm gonna keep them.
