I'm about to purchase a pair of K702's and I'm looking for opinions on a good budget headphone amp to get them started. I do have a Pro-Ject Headbox II which I'm not expecting great things of with the K's, so any thoughts on what else might be suitable? I really don't want to be spending over £100 at this stage and I'd prefer not to go down the tube route if possible: far too much opportunity to tweak and fiddle which I'd rather not get involved with to be honest, but if based on your suggestions that's what it takes then guess I'll have to live with it. Further down the line I have plans for a "proper" upgrade for the amp, but due to a change of circumstances that may well be a good few months down the line. Many thanks in advance, Malc. EDIT - Rethink, budget £300 or a tad over (you only die once!)

Hi, not sure anything new up to £100 is going to satisfy you using these phones - I may be wrong.

I use my AKG K601's with both my Audiolab 8000LX integrated amp & also with a Little Dot II headphone amp and must say the Audiolab delivers better sound - I can listen for hours on end using this amp!  Some integrated amps have very good headphone outputs and can be picked up for less than £100 - try ebay.

I myself will sell the Little Dot II later on & upgrade to something like the Heed CanAmp or Shanling PH-100.

Hope this helps...

Try second hand X-CANS/V2/V3/V8/V8P on ebay. How much of a difference between them and the Pro-ject, I am not sure.

Re: Budget Amp For K702's Please

Thanks for the thoughts.

The K's have been on my indulgence list for a while now which I finally satisfied yesterday. I would much rather have waited until I could have paired them with an appropriate amp but, as mentioned, circumstances dictate that will probably be some way down the line. Having missed out on a Headroom Ultra for £135 on ebay earlier today I'm going to have a punt on the Fiio E9 until I can afford what the K's deserve.

And the K's? Well, pretty jaw dropping! Even through the Pro-Ject which I wouldn't recommend (it destroys most low frequencies), the term I've read "Speakers on your head" for the K's hits the spot. And the detail!! Was listening to GaGA last night when I could hear the faintest of faintest of what was like a nano second of electrical shorting repeated throughout the track. I genuinely thought there was a fault with my cans until I finally realised that it was supposed to be there! Never heard that before through either my Focal's, which are highly detailed, or my Grado's. Happy!
