Anyone compared the Sennheiser Amperiors to the HD-25's
I use the cheaper sp model of the Senn hd-25 for portable use and they sound pretty good. They can be annoying though when the cups spin around and tangle the very unflexable steel cable. Those new Amperiors are so nice and sparkly and no doubt much more pleasant to use that i want a pair.
Anyone tried them side by side with the 25's ? The fact the impedence is improved for portable players must count for something. I did try them in the Apple store but for some reason tune quality is rubbish on their ipods so all the demp phones sound average.
Just watched Tyll's review and he does find the Amperiors superior.
I used to have the Sennheiser HD25-1 II and I liked it but compared to the VModa M-80 it had some harsh mids and a flabby bass, not that the M-80 is bass-light, just much better controlled. From what I have heard the Amperior fixes a few issues in the HD25-1 II, but considering the Amperior is EXACTLY the same as a HD25-1 II, just with aluminium cups it's a complete rip-off @ £260!!

Well at least the impression from these is generally positive, unlike the HD700
To be brutally honest, the Amperior is (to me) a real stylin' headphone. I love the looks - it's not space-cadet looking like the H/K CL, it's not Darth Vader like the black v-modas - it's the perfect look for a techie. But the brutal part: The sound on first listen has a lushness to it that's compelling, but the bass is somewhat boomy and the treble recessed some, so the natural subconscious thing is to turn it up a bit, and that's when the bass defects become more apparent, and the harshness as well.
But having said that, I will now indulge myself with some more of that mid-fi Amperior sound and pretend I have a poor man's PS1000.

I've never heard HD25's, but I can tell you that the Amperior is very efficient. More efficient than the v-moda M80, Beyer DTX501p, Soundmagic HP100, Philips L1 etc. I seem to remember that Tyll at Innerfidelity made a very close comparison of the Amperior to the HD25-1-II.
My Amperior has a thickish rubber cable extending 12 inches from the right earcup, and after trying several different extensions (female to male), I settled on the ~36 inch extension that came with the Amperior. I walk around with it a lot and it's no bother for me at all.
EDIT: If using ipods etc. at the Apple store, be sure to turn off any EQ, and any volume limit settings.
