well well...what do we have here. finally a box that we can be proud of. it's cheap, its sleek and very well-specced based on what i read on FetchTV's website and Tesco's. i think this is what we've been waiting for. as a footie fan waiting for the world cup this is OUR saving grace.

Tesco's gain is 3view's loss...

and Humax's...

and Toshiba's....

 and Philips'....

what say you people? will you be buying one tomorrow?

is this the box we've been waiting for?

has anyone actually tried it?

Full news story here; review sample on its way to us early next week (the PVRs are arriving in Tesco stores/online in batches).

We'll review it and get the review online ASAP - the test will appear here before it does in the magazine.

Tesco's Technika is a brand to watch IMO. I've noticed some of their TV sets have been getting a LOT better of late.

I think Tesco's intentions in the CE industry are getting increasingly serious and this Smartbox could be a break-through product for them.

It's still a little hit-or-miss with the Technika kit - depending on where they source the products, probably - but they've had some strong showings of late. Their new DAB-108p portable DAB radio, for instance, is great for the money (review in our latest issue).

Oh, without doubt they've got some way to go to compete consistently with more mainstream CE brands, but it is interesting that they seem to be coming out with more decent products than ever before.

I think most brands are hit-and-miss to a greater or lesser extent these days, particularly with the amount of outsourcing that goes on even with the big brands (albeit in their small TVs or budget offerings).

Your not wrong about the "hit-or-miss".  I've got a Technika DVD player for use on holidays - to keep the kids amused - and the quality out of it is not good, but it did only cost £20...

And for those of you who have managed to get hold of one, and are having problems with audio playback on HD recordings, there's a software upgrade on the way to fix it. Update here.

A T T E N T I O N !!!    W O R L D    E X C L U S I V E !!!!

here are my initial impressions on Tesco's Technika Smartbox 8320HD Freeview+ HD Recorder.
* managed to get one this weekend and i think i'm one of the very first in the UK to get a hold of one.

Plus:

1. it is small and cute and very light to handle. it's size is almsot similar to the old Sega Dreamcast games console

2. very easy to set-up. if you know your tech and video & audio connections then you would need to read the manual though
it is still a good idea to do so.

3. clearly-laden infos and manual i.e quick start guide

4. you get a special code to be able to access Sky player for free for one month

5. everything out of the box. the only thing they haven't included is a wireless router or an iPad maybe

6. delivery was quick c/o Tesco Direct. ordered it friday 10am arrived saturday.

now for the various glitches / bugs / missing bits and more:

1. loss of audio in recorded HD programmes

2. box crashing / screen turning off when accessing Sky Player "initially"

then after successfully registering online and "signing-in" the box seem to be confused

as i understand our 1 month is free with the voucher. but online it says if you register you get two months free. confusing.

secondly, for instance a programme was available as "free". but when i go to that said programme/episode it says "£1.00 to rent". again, confusing.

also the Sky player account in general gets activated quite slowly. not instantly. which is rather strange.

the Sky player software needs a bit of tweeking too. software is quite slow and sluggish. because of the sluggishness it is very difficult to go back to the main menu interface when currently viewing a specific programme. pressing the Green button supposedly takes you back to the main Sky player interface screen but either it doesn't or it is slow in doing it.

3. missing BBC iPlayer option

4. box crashing / screen turning black when changing HDTV audio output.

5. when accessing Sky player wi-fi/internet connection gets mysteriously disconnected and being asked to "Retry". this was an initial thing.
and when trying to rescan wi-fi (via the Wi-fi Connection Setup) no wi-fi networks can be found even if the wireless router was never turned off.
and also when i go to "Diagnostics" and going to Wi-fi a message says " You are connected via Ethernet". which is really strange.
* this morning so far the wi-fi/wirelss connection is working even whilst accessing Sky player.

6. unable to pull out (i.e show) subtitles when pressing "Text" to an HD programme or to any programme

7. ability to watch video files (particularly Divx, AVI or MKV files) from a USB device. no info or option is available as to weather this is available or possible. whereas you are able to view Jpeg files and music files with no problem. i would be very disappointed if viewing video fiules will not be possible in the future as this is one major reason i bought this box. and also there is almost virtually no audio player interface. you only get to scroll through files, turn volume up or down and play & pause using the remote. that's it. in order to move to the next song, repeat the current song or play the previous song you have to scroll through up or down. rubbish!

8. tech support team on very limited hours on a day. (see fetchtv.co.uk website) must be atleast 8 hrs a day. 12 hours is best. 24/7 is heaven!

again all these bugs & glitches maybe comes down to the software or firmware that badly needs updating. and i have read that an update will be available "on or before june the 9th". i have already forwarded my email to the tech people and i hope they'll be able to sort something out in time for the world cup. this box has a lot of potential only with the further firmware updates that i hope will come soon-ish.

for now...i'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. and that's with the glitches. (that's how good the box is).

any questions i'll be happy to answer them.....

thank you.

Re: Technika Smartbox 8320HD...Tesco's very own Freeview+ HD rec

Smartbox 8320HD bugs and more issues post update:

1.  box STILL crashing / screen turning black when changing HDTV audio output

2.  almost impossible to use the remote and go to menus whilst recording a programme via FetchTV menu
* and this is even on an 11 min short-movie

3. ability to recognise a file on a hard disk drive (via a USB device) made on the NTFS format

4. unable to play recorded programmes pre-software upgrade
* still no audio

5. playing and pausing a recorded file via only one button that is the "Play" button. what's the use of having a Pause button then...?

6. viewing of Jpeg files is STILL slow with "loading" times of at least 5 seconds in between photos which is rather slow. i know it might be down to the size or resolution of the photo but still i would expect it to be better.

7. there is STILL almost virtually no audio player interface. you only get to scroll through files, turn volume up or down and play & pause using the remote. that's it. in order to move to the next song, repeat the current song or play the previous song you have to scroll through up or down.

8. box startup takes more than 20 seconds which is still considerably slow

9. BBC iPlayer always (i mean always) crashes. and if you manage to get through the menu/app is very slow & sluggish

10. box crashed 5x since after software upgrade (see # 1 and 9)

what to do next..
any advice...?

Do you have anything positive to say about this box?  what is the picture like? the sound?

Re: Technika Smartbox 8320HD...Tesco's very own Freeview+ HD rec

well, i did mentioned the positives in my earlier thread. but if you want to know...

 1. picture is excllent. i set my resolution to the max 1920x1080p50 and so far no major fault.

BBC HD looks equal to what i used to have on my Freesat a few months ago. sharp details indeed.

ITV HD looks an "upscaled" transmission of their SD counterpart but i would expect programmes such as music or sports event would look stunning. especially with the world cup.

Channel 4 HD doesn't look upscaled to me but almost in comparison to the BBC HD broadcast.

2. audio wise i am staisfied. i have a 5.1 surround system. my set-up is via a normal audio/RGB (yellow-white-red) system. (which is connected to the TV)

havn't tried via the headphine jack or the digital out ports at the back of the box but i'm sure the audio will be  better if i do it that way.

3. audio on recorded programmes are now accesible

Negatives:

1. after the upgrade the box crashed 5x. and the HD channels was nowhere to be found. but listen.

i had to re-scan the channels 3x then had to reboot then had to completely turned it off, removed the power plug, re-inserted the power plug, turned the box on and voila..the HD channels are back. so far so good thereafter

2. noticed some "hiccups" in the audio of BBC HD and ITV HD channels. so far. i would describe them as a millisecond interruption/cut in the audio. i have emailed FetchTV and so far no reply. i dunno if this is something to do with my audio set-up but i would be happy to take in any advice or sugestions.

all the otehr negatives and/or bugs are on my previous message.

so, anybody else experience these problems with the box?

Re: Technika Smartbox 8320HD...Tesco's very own Freeview+ HD rec

We've now had it officially confirmed that a second firmware upgrade for the Technika SmartBox 8320HD will be released 'within the next 48 hours'. As before, details will be published on the Fetch TV website. It's hoped this second upgrade will fix the remaining bugs.

As for stock availability, more boxes are on the way and should be on sale next week. I've put in a call to Tesco HQ to clarify exactly when they'll be available.
