Humax box settings.......

.........I have set my Dad up with a Humax HD box. Through component (his LCD has no hdmi), I can't get sound using digital optical. I'm feeding the Humax component via a component switching unit which has coaxial and analogue audio connections. I have connected the optical from the Humax directly to the Sony dvd home theatre box (amp). Clare, any ideas?? I have another component connection from the switch box to the amp and coaxial directly to the amp or via the switch unit does give sound. My 1000th post and I'm stuck.
