HD Freesat and Sony HD DVD

I already have a Sony HD TV and non HD hard drive DVD recorder

If I buy a HD Freesat box, will I still be able to record non HD onto the DVD recorder or am I better off waiting for the launch of the HD PVR? Also if I then take it all to France, will it still work there?
