Dolby Digital on V+

I've no idea if this is news or not, but I noticed last night whilst watching the tennis on BBC HD that I was getting full 5.1 surround sound via the HDMI alone. This was confirmed later by the test card thingie which clearly and unambiguously sent a test tone to each of my channels in turn. I was under the impression that 5.1 sound was only available if I connected up via optical for audio?

Oh, right. I'd understood that for some reason these boxes didn't carry surround sound via their hdmi's and instead required an additional optical connection.

The Sky boxes can't carry dolby via hdmi, only optical or coaxial but the V+ box can.

I think that if your V+ box is connected via hdmi, surround sound can be carried over without the need for optical. Usually, optical is needed when your main connection is via scart cable [ such as sky+ ] for example.
