The BBC are finally switching from broadcasting it's HD channels in DVB-S to DVB-S2 mode on 6th june.

With DVB-S2 being more efficient, hopefully we'll se an improvement in PQ

And hopefully an increase in resolution to 1920x1080, rather than the current 1440x1080

I take it, that would also mean an increase in the resolution of Freeviw HD?

The BBC are already broadcasting some 1080p over Freeview HD, which is causing some problems....Clickety

We have a Sony 46hx703 which so far hasn't had any problems with the sound on BBC HD. I do use the info button to see if it's 1080p or i when watching.

Hopefully this will solve the annoying white dot in the bottom right corner of the BBC HD picture which many people see if they watching with picture overscan turned off.

Would also be good if they used this switch to follow Sky's lead and remove the wretched DOGS

Due to the timing, i suspect it's to accomadate the (much speculated) Wimbledon 3D coverage...

Hopefully this will stop the shuddering effect I get from the BBC's HD channels on Sky but I doubt it.

Well the BBC have done it.

Had a problem with my Panasonic DMR-XS350EB in that the BBC HD channels were missing this morning and would not come back with "Auto Setup". Had to reset the unit to"Shipping Condition" first and then run "Auto Setup" again, which has cured the problem.

So anyone with one of this family of Panasonic units, this should fix it for you.

Switched over at 2.44 am.

Lots of reports on other forums that Pana TVs (mainly '08 models) have had problems retuning and owners have had to resort to full factory resets to be able to receive them, also  reports of Sky+HD boxes not working either, (seems to be mainly limited to those with the Irish epg, or NE and SW region for the UK, and mainly Thomson boxes)

And lots of complaints from HTPC users (who didn't have the foresight to include DVB-S2 tuners in their build) who now can't watch them at all...

Thought that was my problem at first until I realised that CH4HD was being broadcast on DVB-S2 so I looked elsewhere for the problem then.

RE: Freesat, Sky and Virgin

My 2010 Panny TV had also lost the channels this morning, but a simple "freesat tune" got them back. The Humax *seemed* to have sorted it out by itself overnight, but unless I'm just psyching myself out, PQ had dropped, but was restored by manually retuning anyway.

As things stand now, I think BBC 1 HD is slightly softer than BBC HD on both units, even though I remember them as on par previously. Anyone have before and after average technical details (1440 vs 1920, average bitrates) yet?

Res is still the same 1440 x 1080, bitrates it's difficult to say since they switched to VBR last year (so average bitrates don't really tell you much), but linowsat is reporting averages of  8mbps for BBC One HD and 8.5mbps for BBC HD for yesterday, hasn't been updated to show todays yet, though i don't expect they'll be much different tbh.

I did check out some TG footage on the promo loop earlier and some of the more demanding stuff was maxing out at 16mbps, pretty much as it did before the switch.

Interestingly though, the BBC HD txp is now carrying 7 extra (though not actually broadcasting any data ATM) Data channels, so it doesn't look like the BBC are going to be using the extra bandwidth for a temp 3D channe, or BBC2 HDl as many thought they would.

Thanks. BTW, like your avatar, although given our kit lists, that must be apostasy on both our parts...
