I am thinking about purchasing sky hd and have a couple questions.I don't have sky at present.

Do I have to purchase through the sky hd site or can I get a better deal elsewhere. I seem to remember something being posted about vouchers via another website but  can't find anything in search.

Do I need a phone line near the sky box? If I do will they fit this included in free installation ?

How many hd channels do I get with their bog standard hd package ?( don't need sports package or movies)

 Thanks in advance

Re: best deal sky hd

I would highly recommend calling sky when ordering

When I called to switch from virgin about 3 weeks ago I wanted Sky+,  Mid-range broadband and free evening and weekend calls (with sky phone-line

They wiped my line rental for a year (around £10 per month) provided I took the SkyHD box (£10 per month) which I snapped up.

They also gave me free access to all sports and movie channels for one month.

Afraid I cant answer more of your questions right now - supposed to be working Smile

If your existing telephone socket isn't near the Sky stb, then the installer will run an extension lead from the phone socket to the stb and yes it's included as part of the installation  so wont be charged any extra.

The other option to a cable phone line is a pair of wireless phone extenders that you can get from Maplin. They worked perfectly when i set it up for my parents recently and only cost about £20. Saves having a phone cable making a mess.

AFAIK, it's £49 with free installation and £25 worth of Tesco vouchers which is pretty darn good and you can usually get cashback from quidco.com.  I did anyway.  I don't have a phone line near the box, I simply ran an extension cable to the box for the installation and also to set up remote record, then put it away as I never use interactive.  I doubt they would fit a BT socket near your box but would run a cable around skirtings/doors etc. which would look rubbish.  At least that is what they wanted to do when I first got Sky.  I told the guy I would run the cable myself under the floor and then err, didn't bother.

It adds £9.75 to the cost of your normal sky package and the channels can be found HERE

I tried them with my Sky+HD box and they didn't work.

Thanks for the info. On the sky site it states you must be connected to a phone line for 12 months. Why is this and can they not tell if you are not connected?

What functionality do I miss by not being connected to a phone line?

sorry bout all the questions but running a phone line would be a nightmare .

Re: best deal sky hd

It has to be connected to the phone line for 12 months because the STB is partly subsidised by BIB (british interactive broadcasting) who are responsible for all the interactive services i.e games, gambling ,shopping etc.

Yes Sky will know if the box is not connected, as the STB will phone home on a regular basis(at least once a month).

If the STB isn't connected you wont be able to use the interactive services mentioned above or order box office films etc,not really an issue if you dont intend using them.

If running an extension is not going to be possible, then you can request an NPL(no phone line) install, sky will charge you a £25 one-off fee for an NPL install and i dont think you can order it on-line so you will have to ring Sky to arrange it.

Or you could do what d4v3pum4 suggest's above and get the engineer to run a temporary lead and tell him your going to run it yourself underfloor or whatever, though i wouldn't advise this obviously as it does mean you're in breach of Sky's t&c's if you dont connect it up.
