BBC HD - Are they ever going to add anything new?

I bought my new Pioneer 4280 and enjoyed SD and upscaled DVD pictures for a while and then my friendly local dealer lent me a Pace satellite box that will only receive BBC HD so that I could see the amazing benefit of HD TV while I saved up for my Freesat box.

I was blown away by the BBC HD channel but now after a couple of weeks I am a bit hacked off that I have seen EVERYTHING.  As good as Jools Holland is, as good as Antiques Roadshow is, dear Mr BBC person - can we please have some more material.  It's not like they have to have everything filmed in HD, just take some 35mm film stuff and chuck it on.

I am hopefully buying a Freesat box soon but am starting to get a bit worried about what there is going to be to watch.

Anyone know if the BBC are going to accelerate their output or just keep broadcasting five hours a day for a while and then watch $ky take over while we all talk about the 'days when HD telly was free for a while..."

They've done Survivors, Heroes, Wallander, Apparitions, and a couple of new costume dramas recently. Not huge output but still good programmes. Couldn't believe that they did Spooks: Code 9 in HD but not the proper series. That was a wasted opportunity.

It all depends on taste, I suppose. ÿI agree that it was a huge shame not to have Spooksÿin HD. ÿIt's also odd that Saturday's Strictly is in HD, but the Sunday show isn't, even though it's recorded straight afterwards. ÿHowever, I lovedÿLittle Dorrit. The final episode was a tour de force.

Pity the OP didn't have his HD system during the Olympics...

At least the Beeb are trying, ITV-HD is non existant and what is on is pretty dire stuff.  They've mucked up the Champions League HD broadcasts a few times.  As previously mentioned the HD content over the summer e.g. Euro Championships, Olympics, Wimbledon, Glastonbury etc. was simply brilliant.  Hopefully more HD content will be on the way but don't hold your breath for any more from ITV!

I know they are trying and although the coverage of the olympics/tennis etc sounded great I am just getting a bit fed up of watching the same programmes repeated so frequently.

Duffy on Jools Holland keeps being put on, but how vast must the BBC music archive be, surely there is more than we are seeing?  Joanna Lumley doing the Fleming programme is brilliant, but not so brilliant to repeat it almost every other night.

Re: BBC HD - Are they ever going to add anything new?

Now I may be wrong about this, but I suspect that the resolution of many older (or even more recent) TV programmes recorded via video may not be in HD and I would also suspect that this forms the vast majority of the BBC back catalogue.

That said I certainly agree with the OP and there is no excuse for a whole load more new/recent things being recorded and broadcast in HD.

Movies are recorded on 35mm film and intended to be shown in the cinema, hence all have a far higher resolution than 'mere' domestic HD - so there's even less of an excuse there - why can't the BBC fill in the HD channel schedule with classic movies?!

Had our panasonic 37" freesat TV now for 6 weeks  and agree that the lack of HD programmes is starting to irritate. ITV is particularly poor the only match we've watched in HD was no better than ordinary digital. Is this the beginning of a big Con?
