For those who haven't heard...
BBC One HD launches in the autumn, and be a simulcast service of BBC ONE, and will broadcast alongside BBC HD, which will remain as a showcase for HD programming and increase its hours from 9 to 12 hours a day.

Well cutting the bitrate from 17 to 9mbps has freed up just enough bandwidth for another low bitrate/low resolution HD channel![]()

My understanding is the BBC are using the bandwidth allocated to channel 5 which was not taken up due to lack of funds. Correct me if I'm wrong

so the bit rate cut was to free up bandwidth for bbc1 hd ?
