Top up TV - Help?

Hi all, help me out please.
I have an upscaling dvd recorder/freeview box connected to my Panny TV via HDMI.
I fancy getting Sky sports 1 and 2 - cable and sattelite not an option - so Top up TV looks my best bet.
Thing is which is the best compatable set top box?
I want to keep the upcsaling feature of my current set up - is it best to buy the cheapo standard box from top up tv, and if so can I 'route' it through the upsacling dvd unit?
Or, more likely, buy a better box which will provide upscaling to non HD channels, HD when available and twin channel 'watch and record' feature with internal storage.
If, as I suspect, the 2nd option is best, can anyone recommend a box that is suitable? I assume that the Top up TV is via a smart card or via software if it has internet connectivity?
