Are you using any other USB devices while you're getting the crackling?

RE: Crackles when using Musical Fidelity M1 in usb mode

Yes, but not from a related socket.  The M1's usb plug is connected to one of three usb3 sockets on a pci-e card.  There is an external hard drive plugged into the same card but it is not switched on.  I tried plugging it into one of the front usb3 sockets (which have no other devices connected) and that didn't make any difference.  What did help was buying a V-Link 192 and putting the usb signal into that and from there by AES to the M1.  The crackles have pretty much disappeared.  An expensive solution but I much prefer the sweeter top end that I now have to the rather abrasive one of the DacMagic+ I had before.  However, the DM+ worked beautifully with no crackles in usb mode.  I'm keeping fingers crossed that crackles and stutters are now behind me.
