Wish I'd done more research.....
My recently acquired Beresford Caiman, AE and ipad remote app have been working very well streaming itunes from my imac. Tonight I installed Spotify Premium and Airfoil (on the recommendation of forum members) and also the Spotify app on the ipad (even though it's really an ipod app). The idea was that I could stream spotify content to my hifi, which works ok, but I've found that I can't control it with the ipad. The ipad only seems to be able to play spotify music on it's own speaker which is obviously useless. My imac is upstairs so I have to go there to change tracks etc. This is no use to me at all and I feel like I've wasted money. Not happy!
JohnDuncan:You're using Spotify Premium I take it? In which case all you need to do is make sure you have the latest iOS installed on your iPad and you can use Airplay to stream from your iPad to the AE.
When you click on the volume control of Spotify, a little 'transmitter' symbol should appear on the right hand side of that volume contorl. Click on that and you'll get the choice between playing the music on the iPad or transmitting to the Airport Express. Click on the AE, and Lo! you should have sound...
EDIT - just read that you are indeed using Premium.
Aha! Thanks muchly John.
If you get desperate in the future for something not iPad compatible, a great alternative is installing a vlc client on your iPad. It will allow you to remotely control your macs desktop

That's the VNC client...
To use it, you'll also need to enable Screen Sharing on the Mac by going into System Preferences, then Sharing. Tick the Screen Sharing box, then click the Computer Settings button and ensure the VNC viewers may control screen with password box is ticked and a password is set.

You should then be all set to connect to the Mac via the Mocha VNC app (the VNC Lite version is free and all you really need probably).
EDIT - actually, full instructions also on the Mocha VNC website here.

Excellent, thanks guys. I'll look into that.
Whoops, just figured out this forum posting on iPhone malarky, so wasn't concentrating too hard
Incidentally, I find that if I hit the stop loading button in safari when the blue progress bar hits the 'h' in whathifi, I can post on the forum without getting anything disabled.
Got the Mocah VNC up and running, thanks again. A bit more fiddly than the itunes remote interface (which is great to use) but the sound quality is excellent (not to mention the vast choice of tunes), which is the important bit.
I'm sure an optimised iPad Spotify will be forthcoming eventually.
Finding it very difficult to scroll down the song lists using the VNC. I can see the iMac screen on the iPad but can't scroll in the spotify panel. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.
I find using VNC a total PITA. Have you tried Airplay yet? Much easier...

Using it how John? Please elaborate.

I wouldn't use VNC as a replacement for the remotes or airplay, as it lags too much and the mouse metaphor doesn't really work with multitouch (as Microsoft are discovering). I would only use it for music when you absolutely cant do anything else. Its great however if you want to monitor a render or downloads etc away from the computer.
I'm using the remote app for iTunes but it's spotify I want control remotely. Guess I'll make do with the iPhone version for now.
I'm presuming the iPad behaves the same as an iPhone. On the iPad Spotify app, click on the middle of the screen to bring up the track options. By the right of the volume control you'll see a little 'transmitter' icon:
Click on that and you should have the option to transmit to the iPad or your Airport Express. Click on the Airport Express:
and your iPad will be transmitting the Spotify audio to the Airport Express. Easier than faffing about trying to remote control Spotify, I find...

Thanks John, yes I'm using it this way. It's just not as slick or intuitive as the iTunes remote app.
