why no clock?

i seem to remember some of the reviews of cdp's that contain a lot of technical info, i have read, mention some form of clock between transport and dac. does a hdd used as a source need/would benefit from a clock? if not, why?
just something i've been wondering about.
Computers use many clock signals in order to keep their circuits working in unison. The processor and the memory use clock waves to avoid any delay which may occur in the system. The hard drive is essentially the lens, so would not need a clock signal (in the sense you use) on it's own to read accurately. When you tie the HDD to the computers DAC, the processors clock signals will keep the two in check. When I say in the sense you use, the commonly known clock signal on a CD player co-ordinates two essentially separate devices. In computer chips clock signals occur onboard a single chip in order for it to achieve accurate results.
