Why Does An Airport Express sound "better" than Arcam CD92?
So what's going on here exactly?
I've had nearly a week of listening to music streamed to my hi-fi from the computer via the AE/DAC, and it sounds stunning, mostly. When I switch back to the Arcam/DAC as the source things are different. Dare I say it, music is reduced, recessed - everything is less than it was, with the possible exception of bass definition, when I use the Arcam.
If the Mac's music is losslessly encoded then there's a distinctive leap forward in separaton and soundstaging. Without veering off any further into abstract territory, all I can I say is my CD player feels thinner and less engaging than the AE.
Scott 4 is now my favourite album of all time - but only when the Airport Express makes it sound so thrilling.
What's happening here? The death of the CD player as source of digital choice?
Has my DAC finally paid out a big digital dividend?
